Saturday 22nd was my second trip to the spot gate , we sat in the third class carriage this time and there where nineteen of us! Did they have trouble catering for that many at once no they did not great food great atmosphere great service especially as we took our 18 month old son who played in the isle and had to be dodged on many occasions had a great time and have recommended to all my friends and have taken most of them to show off the 1928 Pullman carriages, great great and again great xxxxxx

Really good food, went for Sunday lunch and had the set menu, must say the lamb was excellent only criticism would have prefered the gravy to be served seperately ,small detail I know, but the food was of good quality and nice and hot, we sat in one of the carriages very novel.

Would we go again, most certainly

We have been going to he Spot Gate Restaurant now for 40 years ( mere children on first visit , ha ha ) and have recomended it to many folks over the years . The carriages are always a great place to sit and see how people used to travel . The seats are now showing a bit of wear and tear and we found it quite uncomfortably cold while we ate our meal . On being shown to our seat , we had no time to take our coats off before being asked for our drinks order , then being told what the soup of the day was , then the sweet specials . We didn t have to wait very long for our meals to arrive , which we found excellent and served on very hot plates. Once we finished our main course we were served with the sweets again very nice , but we found the whole experience very rushed , I know it is a busy time of year and it was lunchtime , so maybe in the evening it might not be so rushed. At all times the staff were very friendly and helpful .Of course this hasn t put us off going again , here s to another 40 years !!

We visited on a sunday lunchtime, after finding spotgate on tripadvisor,to meet up with some freinds for lunch.
On arrival we found a really old pub in a beautiful natural setting.warmly greeted we went for a pre lunch drink in the cosy bar then through to the pullman railway carriage for our food. We had a variety of starters, all really tasty, then i had the pork belly whilst the rest had the beef brisket.
All were served piping hot with roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, peas, sweede and carrots. Infact too much!but whos complaining? All the main courses were greeted with the appropriate oohs and aahsand were polished off in no time.
Sweets were if anything the slight weak point. Really tasty and slightly tart apple topped with crumbs rather than crumble.
Banoffee icecream sundae being rather tasteless and bland. Neither were bad enough to cause offence or complaint but after the highs of the main course a little disappointing.
Service throughout was fantastic, the waitress in the rayban glasses was really pleasant and smiled, often missing in british restaurants.
All in all a really nice, reasonably priced and unhurried lunch.
We hope to return next time we are in the area.

I have only been here the once, but was advised to go by a friend. We were in one of the Pulman carriages - Ursula - very nice and quaint. We went in the week as i guess weekends would be busy.Very nice, and very different.Definitely worth a visit just to see how the restaurant/carriages are set out!Food and service was excellent,in fact be careful what you order,as the portions are very large. No way could we manage a sweet!!The only down side i could possibly see,was if you are more on the large size you would have trouble getting through the passageways in places as the gaps are very small, due to the layout and the extra large seats. But overall i would definitely give it another visit.
