Eccleshall is only about four miles from home but, for some reason, since 'Julian's' closed some years ago, we never think of going there for a meal. After last night's great experience we shall be heading west more often! A friend mentioned The Old Smithy and recommended we try it. I'm glad we did.
The building has been completely refurbished to a very high standard indeed. Modern decor, clean and bright with high quality comfortable furniture. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. And the food was just gorgeous! Jan started with homemade pate which she thoroughly enjoyed and then she couldn't stop praising the Lemon Sole - always a struggle with the bones but beautifully cooked, she said! I opted for whitebait for starters (a very generous serving) and then went for the rib eye steak - not the most tender but really full of flavour. Homemade chips and super side dishes of vegetables.
My only niggle? Whilst I understand that a lot of the ingredients are locally sourced, I was, as a long established member of the Turnover Club, disappointed that the crockery was not from one of our local manufacturers.
But that apart, a super night out and we shall be back.
