Having not eaten here before I was relieved to read good reviews on tripadvisor regarding this restaurant as we were going to go for our Christmas Day treat for a nice change and to avoid washing up!
The restaurant was very busy but there seemed to be enough staff on hand. We were met with bubbly or oj and were taken straight to our table where poppadoms and pickles were already on the table waiting for us. We enjoyed our nibbles but then had to wait 40-45 minutes for anyone to clear our plates and bring any starters. The English choices were prawn cocktail (filling and tasty) and soup (just tasted like stock). The Indian starter was a plate each with one each of 3-4 nibbles and a small salad garnish (didn't look anything special but everyone ate it).
When we got the English choice 'Christmas dinner' (already plated up) we were at first very impressed by the 3 thick slices of turkey we each got and the roasts looked quite good. Unfortunately everything else was very disappointing; the mashed potato was runny, instant type potato, the veg soggy and over-cooked with loads of sprouts and very few carrots or anything else. To make it worse we were then handed a dish of cold gravy, so we then had to wait 5 minutes for it to be replaced with hot gravy, while our dinner went cool.
The Indian main course looked and tasted really nice but was lacking in variety of flavours, sauce, Indian veg side dishes....although there was an abundance of rice and naan bread!
Again for dessert there was only one choice for each...a strange bland white Indian dessert that no one liked, or Christmas pudding with custard...there was no alternative for children, it would have been so easy to offer ice-cream.
Coffee was ok, no de-caf available, but we got mints woo-hoo!
The toilet downstairs is really dangerous, there is a big hole in the floor, but its ok because someone has shoved the sanitary bin down it...and there is a very stiff lock which caused one of our party to get locked in and so the children had to go without locking the door.
I know what it's like to work in catering on Christmas day but really they should have just served Indian food and done it to a much higher standard than we saw on this day. The 'Traditional English Option' was poor, to be honest the one available in Morrisons was far superior.
We had a lovely afternoon because of making the most of it, enjoying each others company and not having to do any clearing away or washing up? The restaurant itself seems very pleasant. The actual experience lacked finesse; there was nothing special about any of it. I'm really sorry to the regular customers who rave about this place normally, but I personally will not be going back.
