The Three Queens Hotel and Lodge
Ranked #8 of 11 Hotels in Burton upon Trent
Reviewed May 13, 2013

Spent a few days in Burton upon Trent recently for a private visit. I chose to book the Three Queens Hotel because of its location near the city center. The hotel is a very old building with a lot of British charm, maybe friends of modern hotel buildings feel unhappy here. The facilities of the two rooms I booked fit perfectly to the old-fashioned building. The cleanliness is not great, especially in the bathrooms (shower heads), one shouldn't be too sensitive in this point. The staff is mostly friendly, sometimes disinterested, overall ok. The breakfast was excellent. Biggest downside was the construction site in front of the house, which unfortunately also attended over the weekend for an infernal noise and caused an extremely short sleep. Overall, this hotel is fancy and recommended despite some weaknesses.

The only thing in favor of this hotel is its location, very close to the city center. The rooms are extremely old with poor heating/cooling and creaky floors. Decor is very outdated too. All of this could be forgiven if the bed was inviting, but no, it was like sleeping on a medieval bed. Sheets and blankets had holes in them, just unacceptable for a place that is charging 85 pounds per night. Staff seems to be very complacent and oblivious to the state of the place and services. There is a very fine line between being cozy/quaint and being a dump. This place is definitely a dump.

Room Tip: There are no good rooms.

My husband announced that we were booked in for the Valentine Evening with a crowd of friends. We arrived to a very warm welcome from attentive staff. Our "room" was a little house with upstairs bedroom and downstairs lounge with covered court yard and water feature. Very cosy. Drinks in the bar followed by a superb meal. Georgeous dining room was quite a suprise and the table looked very pretty. Platter of starters was a great idea as everything was delicious as was the main course and choice of sweets. The conversation flowed, the drinks flowed and it`s so nice not to worry about who was driving home. Breakfast was most enjoyable and again i must compliment the staff. Many thanks.

Room Tip: Extensive choice of rooms. Ask staff to advise.

Late booking for "Valentine" evening with accomodation. Greeted by very polite, smartly dressed staff who advised us we had been upgraded to "Elizabeth" suite which was excellant, but like most hotels 1 lamp out in main room and 1 lamp out in bathroom, not proffesional, also bathroom ceiling was a bit "tatty" in one place. Only downside being on arrival at restaurant for meal waitress inform us the red meat was "pork"!! albeit beef.major failure. Generally a good night apart from a few niggles.

I stayed here for five nights in the Mary Suite (Room 19) complete with four poster bed. I can't really say I have an complaints about the hotel, except one and i will come to that. The decor may be a bit tired and dated and a coat of fresh paint would probably wouldn't go a miss, and a new carpet in some parts but in general it is OK. In general though most hotels could do with a freshen up so its no complaint just an observation. The staff are friendly and helpful, nothing seems to be to much trouble for them and they do make every effort to make your stay comfortable. Food is nothing exciting, but decent quality and not overly priced like some hotels. The hotel itself is surrounded on all sides by busy roads, which isn't an issue in in itself, unless you are in room 19. If anything larger than a mini goes past the room and bed shakes, luckily the traffic does die down at night. The shower in Room 19 needs some TLC, turn it on, all the way round to hot and leave it for 5 minutes to warm up, other than that it works, however the bathroom was always cold and did not have frosted glass so you need to use the curtains. The room is heated by air con unit which needs to be turned off at night as its a bit noisy. Now the fun bit, the hotel is squint, nothing in my room was level, the stairs up to the room sloped three different ways and if you stood at the bottom and looked along one of the corridors there was a distinct gap due to the slope of the floor, and this was at a fire door!

OK, so would i stay here again? If it was convenient then I probably would, otherwise maybe not.

This Hotel is situated on a Traffic Island !! Odd you may think but their is little or no road noise and it is very easy to find !.
The rooms are small but comfortable and the general public areas are clean and welcoming. The food was good and although Breakfast was delayed when it did arrive it was good. The Staff nade the difference from an average stay, to a good one, with their friendly attitude and real interest in making our stay an enjoyable one.
