The Dial is one of the saving graces of burton... Somewhere that adults can eat, drink and play. The food is always excellent whether you visit by day or night.

Sometimes you can find that you have kept going back to a place without realising quite how good it is. In this cased, I think it is the informality of the place that fools you. The staff are friendly and attentive, without ever seeming to intrude too much. There is a really good choice of food, and you can eat cheaply if you stick to the early evening fixed price menu. The wines are reasonably priced, and water and bread are always available without charge.

Its a busy, bustling place - not the place to take your great aunt, maybe, but a great place for a family get together with young people who like good food but don't want too much formality.

Just a professional bunch of people making you feel comfortable.

Always good food and good service. Have visited many times with friends and family and can honestly say I haven't ever had cause to not be happy.

Will continue to be a regular on our list of go to places.

We have visited The Dial many times, as a couple, in a large group and at meetings. All at different times and days. It is the one place where we have enjoyed a consistant high standard in all areas. The staff are warm and approachable, there is a clean environment with excellent food which is well presented. When we have had people who have a disability with us The Dial have always shown thoughtfulness in where we sit etc. The history of the clock and hence the name is very interesting. To us the Dial has always been an enjoyable experience. On our last visit Saturday evening 17 August, one of the female staff went running outside after a customer who had left his coat and returned it to him.

We visited the Dial on a Saturday lunchtime in August as a party of 12 to celebrate my parents' golden wedding anniversary. We have all eaten at the Dial many times over the years and although the service is often patchy, the food is usually very good. On this occasion, the restaurant was reasonably busy, but not completely packed. The service was extremely slow and while the waitress was pleasant, it seemed to take an age for food and drinks to arrive.
We could see into the kitchen and while lots of people in the restaurant were waiting for food, there appeared to be a noticeable lack of urgency among the chefs. What concerned us most, though, was the behaviour of one of the chefs while our desserts were being prepared. We watched in horrified fascination as he repeatedly licked his fingers while plating up food and getting items out of the fridge. This went on for several minutes, unchallenged by anyone in the kitchen. At this point I went and found the manager and explained what we had observed. To be fair, he was very apologetic but said that they take food hygiene/health and safety extremely seriously. Well, if a chef can stand in a semi-open kitchen and lick his fingers repeatedly while handling food for customers, something has gone badly wrong. Needless to say, this wasn't a very happy experience and spoiled what should have been a happy family occasion. We won't be returning to the Dial in a hurry.
