The Dolphin Hotel Wincanton
Ranked #5 of 7 Wincanton B&B and Inns

We stayed here for two nights with family and found the hotel to be a little gem. The bedroom was spacious and the price very reasonable. We only dined for one night with our family, but found the meal delicious. The staff were exceptional and very accommodating. I would recommend the Dolphin.

My husband and I and our little boy stayed at the Dolphin Hotel for three nights as we were visting friends in nearby yeovil. I was slightly hesitant when reading the review from Janette R, however I am glad I decided to book as we had a very pleasant stay. Our accommodation was clean and had all the amenities we required. The bed was sooo comfy!! We had breakfast each morning and dined one night off the evening menu, the food was well cooked, nice size portions and very reasonably priced. The best part of our stay, was the great customer service we received. All the staff were very attentive and always ready to help. We met the Managers Peter and Millie, who we found to be a lovely couple and nothing is too much trouble. We have previously stayed in 4 and 5 star hotels, which in my opinion, do not have the same professionalism and customer service as the Dolphin. Hopefully we will be back next year.

Stay here often on business. Always good, bar staff friendly and Pete the landlord is great. Breakfast excellent. Great place to stay and if you like a bit of betting the locals always have plenty of advice on offer.

Booked for Great Dorset Steam Fair (Blandford) as good base/location for exploring Dorset and surrounding area.
Room recently refurbished and bathroom/bedroom comfortable and clean although chair in room very uncomfortable for reading. Welcome pack in room professional and we anticipated better service than we received.
Stayed 3 nights and on each occasion (check in included) we returned for key collection, had to find somebody as reception was abandoned and no bell to ring for attention.
Dined at hotel on first night but food overpriced for rather average food although fish in wine sauce was cooked well.
Service at breakfast (not served in bistro/restaurant but in a separate barn block) was poor. Each day something ran out - milk, juice, spoons, cereal and on last morning breakfast not as advertised (only 1 piece of bacon rather than 2, no tomatoes etc etc) It all seemed a bit much for the staff who seemed only able to take 1 order at a time and then go back into kitchen rather than gathering several in one trip. Despite several requests for milk/juice/hot water flasks to be refilled for the self service tea/coffee, had to wait quite a time for this. Breakfast was well cooked and not greasy but let down by service.
As there was not a lot of competition in Wincanton itself for eateries at night, they could do more.
Not once during our few days were we asked whether everything was ok - room, breakfast or dining - missed opportunities really for feedback.
No mirror in room and flex for hairdryer not long enough to reach to use bathroom mirror.
Ok if exploring the area but don't expect anything to do in Wincanton itself (unless you're there for the races). Acceptable but could do better given the rates.

Firstly, when booking this hotel, please remember you are booking a room above a sports bar. We were unfortunate to arrive in the middle of an Arsenal game, so felt awkward about entering the bar for a drink on arrival (we had travelled for 4 hours). Our room was tiny, no wardrobe, just 3 hooks on the wall, the bed was lumpy and the bathroom was very very tiny. It was also very smelly, a smell of cooking fat (that what you get in pub kitchens) mixed in with a damp fusty smell. My husband and I were kept awake until the early hours of the morning by drinkers in the beer garden. The staff made no effort to show us around the property on arrival, it's quite confusing where to go for dinner and breakfast, we had to ask. There's a cafe bar, stables and a bar. But signposted restaurant, stables, cafe bar and bar. Good points were, the food was lovely and well priced. It's an old building, quite quaint, just a shame that we didn't enjoy our stay and left feeling very tired the next morning due to lack of sleep.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the bar and away from the beer garden if you want to get some sleep.

Comfortable place to stay, very easy going and nice breakfast, although it was huge so needed to be careful not to eat it all ! Good off street parking and pleasant beer garden with kids play area. We had two rooms and both very different, seemed like all the rooms were probably different shapes, one room was very pleasant and over looked the garden and had nice big bathroom, whereas the other room was a bit small. Overall good value for money and a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: One of our rooms overlooked the garden and was much nicer/bigger than the other.

Charming Bed and Breakfast, friendly and unhurried. We stayed here for one night. Food was nice and service was as well. Good ales on offer. Overall, I would recommend this place.
The village itself also was very nice and worth spending a couple of hours wandering around and exploring.
