“A good place to eat”
Reviewed September 6, 2012

I have eaten here several times. The food is limited in choice but a good plateful at a very reasonable price. Eat in the bar with drinks at bar prices.
Excellent for group events with pleasant surroundings

I suppose the key question about the Dolphin Hotel is ‘would I stay there again’ and the answer is yes. It is an old building which brings with it a certain charm, squeaky floors and uncertain plumbing though nothing to deter one too much.

The room was clean and well serviced; the bed comfortable and the power shower great. The really large and absorbent bath towels are just what one needs so all in all better than the norm. The occasionally reluctant cold tap on the basin was more of a novelty than an irritant though I suspect a new washer would fix that in a jiffy.

There is plenty of parking on the premises and some nice tables to sit outside and drink or eat. Particularly pleasant is the garden area with shade from a large tree and well kept grassed area. The hotel itself is comprised of the accommodation, two bar areas downstairs and a bistro restaurant across the small courtyard. There isn’t a separate resident’s lounge and the bars are open to the public and it’s a popular place. We stayed there for three nights during the week and weren’t really bothered with the pub activity even though it was hot and we kept the windows open. If, however, you plan on a weekend stay and there is an event on you may feel differently, particularly if you are an early retiree, as it were.

The food is excellent, particularly the ‘Full English, but with other options also. I’ll knock off a couple of marks for failing to have the entire menu available for two of the three days. It’s slightly annoying to have ones first three preferences ‘off’ and no fish course on and typically the excuses for this were pretty lame but delivered apologetically. What they did have was cooked well. The bistro ambiance is quiet and pleasant with nice furniture only spoilt with the inappropriately coloured and rather grubby carpet which I think is on the list of things to do.

All in all a pleasant stay, nice room, pleasant and helpful staff and good food.

Stayed for 3 nights while sightseeing locally. Friendly staff. Very clean hotel. Excellent food. Nothing was too much trouble to the staff. I was treated more as a friend than a guest. Even the locals were welcoming when they saw a strange face in the bar.

If i'm ever back in that part of the country then i wouldn't hesitate in staying here again.

I booked one night at The Dolphin Hotel for my elderly mother and was very pleased that I did. These people couldn't do enough, they certainly went the extra mile in making her stay as enjoyable as possible. When we picked her up the following day, their welcome was exceptional. We all had lunch there and we all found the food to be excellent and brilliant value for money. Thank you Dolphin, you were a breath of fresh air.

My boyfriend and I stayed in the Dolphin for 2 nights for a friend's wedding in Wincanton. The pub itself is cosy and has a lovely feel to it. On arrival, the staff were helpful, showing us to our room whilst explaining about meal times etc. When we booked, we were given the family room as it was the only one left and it was fantastic! 2 big double bedrooms which were bright, clean and airy with brand new bathroom. We used one room as a dressing room!

Breakfast, which was included in the price, was excellent. Choice of large full English or small and any other combination of ingedients e.g. beans on toast. The usual cereals and juices were also available, as was fresh coffee and tea. We did not eat at the pub in the evening but that was pruely due to the wedding activities. The waitress at breakfast seemed a bit down and gave the impression that she did not like what she was doing, but she was probably just having an off day! It did not negatively affect our judgment of the stay at all and really is the one small fault I can find.

I really struggle to understand some of the poor reviews on here, which is why I decided to share our experience. Of course there may be some noise, you are staying in a pub, but in our experience, everything about the stay was enjoyable. I would definitely reccommend - great value for money and a very enjoyable experience!

We enjoyed our stay at The Dolphin, the staff were very welcoming and helped us with anything we needed. We had an evening meal which was freshly cooked and tasted fantastic. The room was clean and of a very high standard, excellent value for money. We had our childern with us who were made to feel very special. The breaklfast was wounderful and the perfect end to our stay.
I would defiantly recomend this hotel to anyone.
