“Nice but not Great”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2010

Had a 3 night break, our room although large'ish was a little disappointing, the bathroom was in need of upgrading, black mould around the bath and ingrained stains which was off putting for a nice soak, I would have expected someting much more luxurious. It was very quiet hardly any people there so not much atmospher, perhaps the wrong time of year to go but thought there maybe at least something going on. Service wasnt as good as expected or should be for a 4* place. Liked the break but wouldnt return.

We stayed 3 nights D B&B at this lovely hotel and hugely enjoyed our stay. We also attended the history tour of the hotel - a Palladian style mansion and thoroughly recommend it. Staff always polite and attentive, room (the Pink Room) was excellent, and the gardens including the Victorian kitchen garden were most impressive. We took the opportunity to visit nearby Wells (cathedral = wow!) and N Trust Tyntesfield which was staggering. We loved this break and recommend this hotel.

Visited Ston Easton on October 23rd as a treat for my girlfriends birthday. From the moment we arrived we experienced a high level of service from all departments. The grounds are beautiful and are well worth a walk round. Please do not fall for the cow in the garden illusion. If you are lucky either Oscar the hotel dog or one of the hotel cats will accompany you on your walk. Evening dinner was of the highest standard, both in the quality of the food, presentation and service. Our superior room had a four poster bed and we had great nights sleep.Breakfast service wasn't up last nights standard. A 45 minute wait for an excellent quality cooked breakfast isn't good, especially when other diners arriving after you were being served. Aslo dirty cutlery and forgetting to serve toast (twice) was the only blot on an excellent stay and hence only a four star review.

We celebrated our weekend in style at this fabulous Palladian Mansion. We had a big dinner on Saturday for close friends and family and everything went exceptionally well. The food was fanstastic, the staff and service was excellent. The ceremony was efficiently run and we had fantastic support from the staff and wedding co-ordinator. We had incredible weather which meant we could use the outside space which made the day even better. The evening reception was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Those guests that stayed the night had a great time in exquisite rooms and comfy beds that they were sorry to leave the next day. This is a great hotel, a wonderful place for an event and we can't wait to go back again to replay all our memories. It's worth every penny we spent.

I always like to be absolutely fair - so here are the highlights:-

1. the room - absolutely beautiful and I found out (yesterday by checking their website) that I had been upgraded from a standard room, to a superior one (an upgrade of two room types) and the bed was very comfy.
2. Unlike the last person who posted, I found the front of house staff extremely pleasant, attentive and welcoming
3. Breakfast was good with friendly and efficient service and a sublime scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.

But there were some real service problems:-

1. as part of my package I had a champagne afternoon tea included. I've had these at other establishments and it's supposed to be about being pampered - so I was surprised that once served the first cuppa - they were off - never to be seen again. Which is when I discovered that I hadn't been provided with a napkin or even a knife to cut the scones open with....and where was the offer of more - two tiny finger sandwiches does not an afternoon tea make!!!

2. Dinner that evening suffered from the same problem - I waited 20 minutes before anyone arrived to ask if I wanted a drink or to see the menu. The food when it arrived (finally at about 9.15pm) was absolutely fine - but to be honest - particularly as I was dining alone - I was completely bored by the whole process by this time.

Timings were significantly better on day two - I'd don't know if they were short handed on the first day - but am I unrealistic in my expectations that (whatever might be going on behind the scenes) the customer should not really be aware?

This is a wonderful hotel in a quiet location and a sedate pace of life. Our room was great, yes the shower head is at a daft height as mentioned elsewhere and you do get some noise from the kitchen extract fan but it did not seem to matter! The experience is great if you go with the flow.

Service for the restaurant is pretty slow and we waited over an hour between arriving to eat and sitting down. The fine dining is a bit hit and miss, the deserts were to die for but the mains were disappointing and honestly, at the price charged, not good enough. The food served off the lounge menu was however great. It was fairly quick and sensibly priced in comparison.

I am guessing that there might be a bit of a kitchen issue because the kitchen garden looks way under used and the meals are 'vegetable light' but if the food was as good as claimed the restaurant would be full, you may not get an easy booking and you might miss out on eating dinner in one of the best dining rooms anywhere.

Would we repeat the experience? absolutely.

Lovely old building that has been sympathetically restored, room were immaculate as were all the public spaces. Girl i=on reception more or less ignore us when we arrived and seem unable to cope with her work load. Was disappointed by restaurant food, main course was cold and service as very very slow. We were tole they had a wedding on in other restaurant, but that hardly helps when your paying quite a lot for what was a pretty average meal. We loved Oscar the hotel dog, BUT why does he have to wear an (illegal) shock collar - really cruel.
