“Like living in a Jane Austen novel!”
Reviewed March 16, 2006

Drove to the hotel in an unseasonal snow blizzard, and the glorious house was a welcome sight indeed as we scrunched up the gravel drive. The staff were immediately welcoming, arranging for a splendid afternoon cream tea by a roaring fire in the magnificent public saloon. One of the glories of this place are the public rooms - the intimacy of the Library, the elegance of the drawing room, the splendour of the high-ceilinged saloon - all with real fires, deep sofas and endless tea and coffee! We loved this place - just bliss for three nights - wonderful helpful staff, magnificent breakfasts and afternoon teas, intimate dining room, really comfy beds, decanter of whisky and homemade biscuits in your room, tea tray to your room in the morning.....we were praying to get snowed in. We will DEFINITELY return. You MUST go there!

We stayed here for my wifes birthday, and we loved it. Nestling deep in the Somerset countryside, this hotel is more like a country house than a hotel. Staff are low key but efficent, friendly and welcoming, with a nothing is too much trouble approach (e.g. "What is the menu for your childrens' high tea? "Well, what would you like?"). The restaurant food is very good, and the wine cellar well stocked. Bedrooms are very well appointed, although with no lift, the top bedrooms can be a bit of haul, especially when you are carrying a heavy 18 month baby. The grounds are extensive, with a river running through the middle. In the summer they would be lovely; in the wet gloom of a November afternoon, they were still worth a muddy walk around, especially when accompanied by one of the hotel dogs. Not much in the way of facilties (no spa or pool etc) but it is not that type of hotel. Much more a place to just relax.

In all Highly recommended.

My boyfriend and I stayed at this lovely country house the weekend before Valentines. We took a 1 1/2 hour train from London to Bath and a 20-minute taxi to the hotel. We were welcomed by one of the house dogs, a black cocker spaniel named Sweep, who promptly rolled over in the hopes of getting a tummy rub. We were placed in the hotel's flagship "Master Bedroom" -- although we hadn't specifically requested it -- and were really wowed by its furnishings (e.g. 4-poster bed) and the views across the countryside.

During the day the other house dog, Sorrel, was more than happy to take us for a lovely walk through the woods and fields surrounding Ston Easton. The grounds are very nice and on a clear day (which we were lucky to have) you could stay out there forever...

Dinner was excellent, although service was sometimes a little slow (or perhaps forgetful). The staff is well-meaning though, and very friendly and helpful. After dinner we retired to the main salon for tea and port, and snuck a few petit fours to Sweep (who looks like she gets the bulk of the guests' treats!). We had breakfast (cooked to order) once in the dining room and once in our room; both were very nice. A few times we popped into the salon for tea and biscuits.

I had to send some business emails and use the internet but the broadband access in our room wasn't working. I was told to call the service provider, but their help desk couldn't get me online either. In the end I had to take my laptop down to the manager's office and plug in there. Not ideal, but at least the staff were accommodating.

Overall we had a wonderful and very romantic weekend. Normally I like to try new places, but Ston Easton is such a peaceful destination that I would definitely go back for a quick weekend getaway. You really feel at home when you're staying at Ston Easton, and you never want to leave!
