“lunch good, but hotel has problems”
Reviewed May 5, 2012

lunch today was fine, but drinks pricey £4.50 for one cup of coffee, not even a biscuit ! £10 for a martini and lemonade
Great traditional hotel, but we hear von esson group have the receivers in, hope the hotel stays in business
Good luck

Room Tip: set menu good, but drinks pricey

Having requested a lower floor, I was given a room with a view, fourth floor at top of the house, no lift. Baked like a sauna, not possible to regulate heating much oneself. Both lampshades burned and badly marked, hair dryer, hot and noisy with no blow. Cold tap on bidet not working, shower screen hinge coming loose, vent in bathroom breaking and old, bath panel cracked and mucky, floor tiles badly fitting enough to stub toe on crossing threshold. Cheapest toilet roll in situ and tissue that needed to be used 4 at a time to not blow a hole through. No mini bar or fridge in room. On request one can order a hospitality tray (anywhere else would be standard) with kettle! 24 hour room service. Entire hotel looks tired needs a refit. Decor very old fashioned could be so much nicer if restored properly. Basement damp and smelly in snooker area. Sadly, there were two badly behaved spoilt children running riot on the days we were there. Overall a very expensive £2-300 per night stay. Would look for a better place to stay next time.

Room Tip: Higher floors are hot, small and dark. An estate agent may call this cosy or homely, basically you...

Back for the third time and another positive experience. Quiet room overlooking the rear and staff as pleasant and discreet as ever. Couldn't really wish for a better get away.

We stayed here for three nights and had a wonderful stay. The staff were excellent- helpful, courteous and very friendly, the breakfasts were of a very high standard and the facilities were exactly as advertised.
Would certainly recommend for a weekend away.

I stayed here for a family get together in Feb 2012 (See VMAW) and have dined here a few other times. .

It has such a relaxing charm to it. Guests are allowed to treat it as a stately "home from home". The dog is hilarious and lets you take it on walks and it was just lovely to relax in the beautiful ornate sitting rooms or wander around the very large garden.

Downstairs has an old billiard room and kitchen decked out as is 100 years ago. I like the fact that each bedroom is so different making each stay a new experience. All the bedrooms I have seen are a very good size, with good comfy beds, modern bathrooms and very attractive antique furniture. There is no traffic noise.
Children and dogs are welcomed but on my visits, were not intrusive.

Service is very good. Staff seem genuinely friendly and interested in their guests comfort. The silver service at dinner on my last visit was really excellent. (The best I have experienced). The food at SE is very good, but not Im not a complete fan as it varies from good to fabulous and I would rather it was consistent so I know what to order. Some portions can be on the small side, so order a starter.

For someone looking for Spa luxury, This is not a bling bling place and might not be for you. What it is, is an old, stunningly beautiful, and relaxing house that makes you feel as if you are in a very well run 1930's stately home.

Niggles are outweighed by the loveliness of the place, but a few things you might want to know before booking
- no kettle/fridge in the rooms Ive been in (probably due to fear guests will damage the antiques), but service is quick if you need something and anyway, you will want to enjoy your drinks etc in the drawing rooms.
- if you dont like stairs, ask for a first floor room as there are no lifts (due to being Grade 1 listed building. Cant really criticise them for this)
- at quiet times of the day, you sometimes need to go to the front desk to get coffee etc...

Enjoy your stay. I cant get enough of this place.

Room Tip: If you dont like stairs. I suggest you ask for first floor rooms. Some rooms are right at the top of...

First time staying last weekend and cannot fault this hotel, staff are very helpful and friendly, Oscar the spaniel is great fun, food is just sublime, if you stay there treat yourself to dinner, you will not be disappointed - it really is cuisine of the highest level. Very relaxing place to stay. We are certainly going back again soon.

We stayed here for two nights in mid March (couple + father). On arrival we discovered that our two rooms were on the top floor, with lots of stairs which would have been difficult for my father. The receptionist could not have been more helpful and we were immediately allocated two very nice rooms overlooking the front of the hotel, one with a four poster.
The hotel itself is a lovely Palladian mansion with each room furnished with antiques. The main lounge is an exceptionally nice room to relax in, also the library. All the staff were very helpful at all times and even Oscar (the hotel dog) was wonderful! The food in the restaurant was also first class and after a very good breakfast a stroll in their stunning gardens is just what you need. We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone (and we have already). It is so relaxing, not too formal, but formal enough, we will return - hopefully very soon!

Room Tip: If you have difficulty climbing stairs make sure to let the hotel know in advance as it is quite a h...
