A classic case of a worn out hotel run by people who have given up caring.
Greeted by a fellow who could not find the room keys. Found the keys then up the stairs with the grubby carpet then along a corridor with an alcove that had the mops and cleaning supplies in full evidence. Greeted by a room that had seen better days. Seems that the options in Portlock for lodging are limited and these folks do not need to try.

Pleasantly situated in the High Street the Lorna Doone is comfortable but slightly run down in parts. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Our room was clean and just about large enough - and reflected the room rate. Food was well cooked and presented but not exceptional.

There is very limited parking (4 spaces) which means that you have to park in the nearby public car park (maximum 2 hours) and Sundays are not free.

Warn them if you intend to have a afternoon shower/bath because there is no hot water otherwise.

Overall we enjoyed our stay.

We did not stay at the hotel but had dinner one evening. Staff were pleasant and welcoming and service was fine. My wife and I both had fish starters, I had lamb for main and my wife which had a rump steak. The food was well cooked and enjoyable without being spectacular. Prices for food and wine were a little dearer than I would have expected though not extortionate and I appreciate that Porlock must take advantage of a relatively short tourist season so no real complaints on this score. However, when I checked my bill next morning, there was a charge described as "Bar £3.40" included on my bill despite not have anything from the bar other than a bottle of wine and coffee, both of which were detailed separately on the bill. This may have been an honest mistake but it nevertheless disappointing.

Called in for lunch as the outside of the hotel looked traditional and inviting. We were greeted immediately we entered the bar and advised that hot meals only were available at £5 each. A short but interesting menu was produced and we were pleased with the quality and quantity of food. We ordered coffee and a pot was brought which gave four full delicious cups at an exceptionally low cost. Couldn' t fault our experience. Would suggest that the lunch menu board is displayed outside the hotel in a prominent position.

I arrived with my sister for a few days walking in Exmoor. We were made very welcome by Mo who never seems to take any time off and is friendly and helpful all the time. We carried our luggage up the stairs, I didn't mind that however the stair way was very narrow and carpet grubby! The rooms on first view were "cosy" however on closer inspection they were very tired and in dyer need of painting and cleaning. I was fortunate in that I had a bath and shower although very antiquated they did work. My sister on the other hand had a shower that did not work and although she complained little was done! When someone upstairs filled the bath to full the water ran down the inside of her window and she was offered towels to clear it up !!!! (Novel!)
We were on the full board basis and the food wasn't to bad, it got better as the days went by.
As a place to rest one's head after a days walking it was ok however very dissapointing for anyone who did not have a hot bath and/or shower to annoint ones tired legs.
The hotel says that it has a car park which is interesting, there was room for four small cars so I had to pay £3.50 per day to park in the long stay car park!!! I would visit Porlock again however I would choose another place to stay and that's a real shame as the staff were brilliant.........

The hotel bed and breakfast was fair and not overpriced. Our problem was that the billboards advertised Lobster Salad. What we got was a very small lobster for £14.50. There must be a special rule in place for Lynmouth Potboats that they can sell such small lobsters to local hotels. If you are tempted by this dish then you should enquire as to the weight of your lobster before ordering!
