“Wow!”
Reviewed April 16, 2013 via mobile

My partner and I dined here as we stayed in Frome overnight. WHAT a fabulous place!
It apparently went under a refurb only two weeks before we arrived. As we walked through the doors, this beautiful dark atmosphere engulfed us with other patrons sat in little cubbies along the long corridor to the bar.
We ordered a bottle of the crémant on arrival, which was lovely after a long day of travelling.
To start, I had the scotch egg with parsnip purée - Cooked beautifully with a runny yolk! My partner had the haslet - rather big for a starter, but he wolfed it down still as it was beautifully done also!
For main, I had the selection of cooked guineafowl - absolutely splendid! I have never had poached fowl before and it was a pleasant surprise! M partner had the fillet of beef - of which we were warned it may not be as rare as expected due to the way of cooking, however it was very much enjoyed.
One thing to mention about this restaurant is the presentation, of which we commented upon at this point. The standard of the cooking and the beautiful presentation was surpassing many Michelin restaurants I have eaten at. Chef, Roland Hughes deserves some serious commendations for this!
I finished the meal with a vanilla parfait with champagne poached rhubarb and my partner had the chocolate delice. Both dishes were perfectly sized as nice delicate desserts and the presentation again, amazing!
Thank you so much for a fabulous meal! I shall have to visit Frome more often!

we found this lovely establishment through an artist we follow who had a venue at The Archangel. I believe they had just refurbished the building and were still in the final stages of completion before the evenings performance when we arrived.
From the checking in despite all the time restraints in getting the place organized, a member of staff took the time to show us to our rooms, talk about the evenings performance, showed us where we would dine and where we could park as it is a busy little town. Dinner was absolutely superb. Considering that everything was totally new for the staff, they did extremely well and you were made to feel welcome and treated a an individual. The staff took care in presentation and were eager to please. We chose a luxury deluxe room and the bathroom was lovely supported by a lovely "tin affect" slipper bath. All very unique. The bed was comfortable, fresh milk and choice of tea and coffee in the room. Breakfast was first class, service excellent and on the whole a very good choice and enjoyable stay. We would definitely stay again although possibly choose a room at the back as it was a little noisy being the road side.

Room Tip: Maybe towards the back of the hotel.

We've been to the archangel twice so far. Both times we were in the rooms out in the courtyard which are not the ones that you see in the pictures but we knew this before we booked. They were also cheaper as well. To be honest for the price I was amazed by the quality, lovely touches such as herbal tea, dressing gowns, bottled water etc. The staff were always friendly and helpful. We ate in the restaurant both times and each time we loved the food and appreciated how little it cost for what we got. I won't lie the last time we were eating, after the refurbishment which is lovely, it was a slightly uncomfortable atmosphere. But this was due to an awful patron on the table next to us that seemed to take pleasure in being rude and condescending to the staff. The professionalism that they showed whilst dealing with such an aggressive customer. All in all I would suggest this to anyone who likes friendly hotels.

Room Tip: I would ring the hotel and talk to them about what you are looking for

I visited for breakfast and found an excellent, warm, comfortable, high class furnished coffee lounge and luxury fitted out bar area. I will return for dinner on a Friday music night.
The presentation of the tables was exceptional and really comfortable wing backed chairs with bench seating in a snug area under a skylight, including patriotic union jack covers.
Also has been improved the flow up the internal corridor in to an excellent part covered garden area.

We don't really ever stay in B&B, but since we were coming from the United States for a wedding and didn't know much about the area, we let our friends make reservations for us.
What a pleasant surprise from the moment we entered this place.
Archangel is a little charming hotel located in the center of Frome with a super fast and friendly service. Everyone was nice and helpful to us.
There is a small bar with a sitting area in a front, great, good size restaurant and a beer garden on a back.
The entire place was beautifully renovated, but it still sits on old (I mean several hundred years old) walls. We had an old exposed wood beam on a ceiling and a gorgeous 100 years old copper bathtub - never stayed is such an interesting room before. There were many special details in rooms and throughout the hotel.
We had a great experience!

There are certainly pluses - shame they are outweighed by the minuses.
The pluses - The Archangel is beautiful, combining the old 600 year old buildings with modern design. A lot of money has been spent on this place in the past and it shows. The rooms are stunning, the restaurant is architecturally clever and the public areas have a great vibe.
The young staff are, helpful friendly and do their best to help - whilst firefighting. Re-active is their only setting, as Archangel appears to run without training, leadership or focus.
If you book a room, you are a second class citizen as the emphasis is on restaurant and bar customers. reception is never manned and if you need anything, you have to run around behind someone in the restaurant or bar and try to catch them.
What was promised in our package, wasn't offered, without the chasing situation. The rooms just seem to run themselves, with staff intervening if pressed. the reservation process had been an early warning, with no-one much interested in making the booking and it was certainly never officially confirmed to me.
Staff run around like headless chickens, half the restaurant menu and wine list is 'off', as is most of the breakfast menu.
The noise is also appalling. The draw and glamour of Archangel, situated in a rural town, means that everyone of a certain age wants to drink there and eat. Great news for the establishment, but a nightmare for anyone hoping to sleep in those lovely rooms. Noise from the kitchens, noise from the bar until well after closing time as people congregate in the street. We were doubly blessed, being adjacent to reception and above the public toilets. We were even able to hear the hand driers in the restrooms below.

Someone needs to sort this place out - and fast. Visit the bar, visit the restaurant but think long and hard before you place your precious 'down time' in the Archangel's' hands. You will leave exhausted, grumpy and frustrated and what could be.

Room Tip: One of the four new rooms on the courtyard- winter only, as in summer, the courtyard is used for dri...

I have been to the restaurant for lunch and dinner and have enjoyed both occasions very much. The food is good, the service is good and knowledgeable. I also like the way that the restaurant has been designed as a conversion of a very old building with a mezzanine floor above. Quite unusual. Very reliable bet and very likely to return.

Room Tip: did not stay so cannot say
