I can’t comment on the hotel side as I live in Frome. The restaurant and bar though are absolutely first class, this place used to be one of the worst pubs in Frome when it was called the Angel, a real dive. That was before the massive renovation at huge costs and the results are simply stunning the disused barrel storage area is now a lovely courtyard garden with stripped bar brickwork. The horrible old toilets have been converted in to a lovely rustic restaurant serving excellent food.
A word of caution though as its now been a fair few years since they reopened as the Archangel and the cracks are now beginning to show and standards are most definitely slipping from the hugely high mark they first set themselves. The originally beautiful décor is starting to look a tad frayed and could do with a revamp, the once peerless selection of wines and imported beers is starting to look less inspiring, I really miss the excellent Veltins german lager they used to tap and have found the substitues sold out on more than one occasion. They’ve lost some of the best bar staff since I first started going there as well as others have noted the wait times at the bar are often a bit excessive. Have heard rumour of ownership changes since they originally reopened hopefully they don’t let things slip any further and try and regain the standards they once set, this could easily be a 5 out of 5 but at present they’ve slipped to a 4 out of 5 for me but are still streets ahead of the meagre local competition.
