A very poorly signposted car park, to the extent that there are no signs at all until you are driving in to it did not provoke the best of moods on arrival. However, check in at the bar was quick and easy and we were initially pleasatly surprised with our room. At a very quick glance the room is large and had a balcony over looking the market town, the bed is clean and we can ignore the stains, peeling paint and old bathroom (its just for one night after all).

I had taken note of previous reviews recommending that the rooms at the rear of the hotel are given a wide berth because of noise, unfortunately although our room was at the front (purely by chance) I hardly slept a wink. I don't think the hard, lumpy pillows helped but the constant noice was beyond a joke. The noise from the road was bad enough, double glazing may be an idea to reduce the sounds of lorries deliverying in the early hours and general traffic?! There was also a couple of lads banging on the front door after hours to be let in and what sounded like a heavy trolley being wheeled around outside in the hallway and in the rooms above. Horrendous night,

The service at breakfast was fine and the full english was acceptable, although my opinion of this is probably tarnished due to my lack of sleep. I would not stay here again if the need arose and would advise others to think twice.

Had to check in by way of the bar....No problem
Yes it is a little difficult to locate the parking garage, but got there in the end.
Room was single on the top floor, no view but this is a market town people!
Room was clean and had plenty of tea and coffee, bed comfy.

Breakfast was really good.
Would I stay again...without doubt. Great bang for the buck.

We arrived for the weekend 21/09/12 for 2 nights. room was on the top floor with the kitchen extractor fan as a lovely view to look at when we opend the window! The hotel does not resemble the pictures which is a shame as the out side looked very up market! the only room that had a over haul was the dinning/breakfast room. The whole hotel needs updating, it was run down with stained wall paper, dirty walls and paint. the room we had stank of smoke, lucky we were out all day as we left the window open. However, the staff were great, friendly and polite and the food was very nice indeed. shame the interior lets it down.

Stayed at the George in Aug 2012, not the best experiance for the money! Stayed in a family room over looking the kitchens. . . thank you who ever booked us into that room. Noise from fans and coolers kept us awake all night!!! Bathroom was very poor and needed a total overhaul, a wooden frame placed over the existing broken mirror isn't really a makeover! Broken tiles around loo and sink, black mould, minging radiator all made using the bathroom an unpleasant experience. Bed linen was clean as were the towels and tea & coffee amounts were good. Breakfast was reasonable. Lockable garage at the rear is good even thou a tad tight for getting your car in. Hotel needs a lot of work done to get it looking like a hotel that can charge £184.00 for 2 nights B&B for a family room (2 adults & 1 child). The hotel seems to be owned by a pub chain that is not keen to spend money on the building or employing staff. On the upside, the Chinese resaurant up the hill is well worth a visit. If we ever stay in the area again, will deffo look for somewhere else to stay! Sorry George, you must do better!

Room Tip: Ask if you are being put at the back of hotel, if so take ear plugs or go elsewhere!

stayed at the george for three nights whilst visiting the area, a great base for visiting longleat, stonehenge and bath etc.
fabulous staff, really friendly and helpful, specially suzanne, thank you.
breakfast was lovely, with plenty of choice and cooked to perfection
Had a meal in the restaurant one evening and it was really good, in fact it was better than really good it was superb, and i would highly recommend the apple and strawberry crumble.
All in all i would recommend highly and would give staff 11 out of 10 for such fabulous service

A very nice and well run hotel. The bedrooms are well appointed, nice big bathroom with a perfect shower which is unusual. Try and get one of the 1st floor rooms overlooking the main rd. it has big French doors opening onto a balcony, saves going down to the street for a smoke, although they do have smoking rooms but I wpuldn't fancy that as they usually smell. Breakfast is served until 10.00 am, very civilised. The staff are friendly and the restaurant always seems busy, although I didn't have a chance to try it. The remarks on some of the reviews

about the car park are ridiculous, it is easily accessible and is free.
