this was the only place in town where there was tables free and understandably so! service was poor and the food inconsistent. we had the same starter and mine was overseasoned and my partners was bland. Overcooked veg with the main course. my fish was overcooked and soggy.. he had the steak (from Gerald David) which was expensive but good quality. we asked for rare and got medium-well. passed on the desserts. wine was poor quality and expensive with a mediocre range of beers. had to walk out in the rain to the cash point because the card machine didn't have a signal. we fought our way out through the very loud locals chain smoking outside.
a waste of money, the only good point was that we weren't stopping there.
it is a shame because this place could be something special. its the only hotel in a lovely town in Exmoor. This could be a top notch hotel and restaurant but needs a lot of tlc and interest

Really sorry but when you book a room for that price you don't expect your heart to sink as soon as you hit the reception. We checked into our room and were transported back in time 15 years. This is a hotel crying out for a refurb. I had left my gorgeous home for a night away and really didn't expect this in the middle of Dulverton. I could have cried. Quickly went straight out to the restaurant two doors up to console ourselves with the usual open armed welcome and excellent food which always greets us there. Lion staff very odd, sure Manuel was lurking in the background and expected Cybil to appear at any moment. No people skills at all, just wanted our money. Mill house next time for us.

We stayed two nights here because it was the only hotel in Dulverton. For £82 the room was very poor value. It was a shrine to peeling wood chip wall paper. There were stickers on the toilet cistern that had been there so long the writing had been worn off. The towels were tiny and the shower was such a dribble it took ages to rinse my hair. One window looked our onto a wall and a roof with broken tiles. The other looked into the yard of the restaurant next door. Consequently both windows had net curtains so thick that there was very little natural light, which made the room really depressing. As we were the only people staying there I could not understand why we were not offered a better room. I can only assuse the other rooms were worse.
In fairness the evening meal we had was very good although the service was average. We were served by a nervous little girl who I have to assume was old enough to be at work but truly looked no older than 12.
Loved Dulverton but would never stay there again.

We called here for dinner on Saturday while staying on Exmoor and enjoyed an excellent meal. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is situated in one of the most scenic villages on Exmoor

Had a lovely day on Exmoor, good supper in the Dining Rooms next door to the Lion in Dulverton and then decided not to drive home late but stay overnight. Had a choice of 2 double rooms at the Lion - one looked a bit grim so chose Room 9 which seemed better. The reception and welcome was friendly but not very professional or on the ball. The owner/s seemd to be hidden away upstairs and no-one in charge.
The room was not good. Thin pillows, the bed was too wobbly and soft and kept rolling away from the wall on its castors. The towels were small, there was no hot water for a bath - neither at 10pm nor the next morning - the extractor in the bathroom sounded like an aeroplane landing at Heathrow, there was no chair or stool in front of the dressing table, the curtains were so thin the street lights shone into the room, there was a tea/coffee tray but no spoons. In the morning both the large sash windows were absolutely dripping with condensation. Generallly it was all very make do and not up to the standard expected these days. If it had cost £50 for a double room I would not complain but for £82 and £5 for the dog you do expect everything to work and the facilities to be up to scratch (but not necessarily luxurious). Although someone had already lit the open fire in the dining room which was nice, the full cooked breakfast was horrid and greasy and the coffee was cold - the nastiest fried bread I have ever encountered. All a bit of a shame really as this very old, potentially slightly grand, building and hotel should be one of the stars of Dulverton which is a charming country town on the southern edge of the moor. I don't think there was anyone else staying that night and we won't stay there again. Sorry.

Stayed here for 3 nights between Christmas and New Year. As soon as we arrived we were made to feel very welcome. This is a lovely old building with loads of genuine character and a nice homely feel. If you like modern steel/glass minimalism then this is not the place for you. We were in room 1 which was a large room with a very comfortable bed, loads of wardrobe / drawer space and a nicely appointed bathroom.Everywhere was spotlessly clean and tidy. All the other guests we spoke to were regular visitors which is a very good indication. I agree with the previous reviews of the food - excellent menu and very good value for money. We ate in the restaurant every night and would do the same again.
The surrounding moorland was wonderful and we had a trip to Exeter one day to do some shopping which is less than an hour drive away.
All in all a really successful few days which made the Christmas period memorable. Thanks to all at the hotel for a lovely time.
We are going to return in the Spring and use the Lion as a base for exploring the moors and the coast.

Room Tip: Only saw our room ( number 1 ) which was very comfortable - would ask for this one next time.
