Walled Gardens of Cannington

Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Located in the village of Cannington, Somerset, the Walled Gardens lie within the grounds of a medieval priory and many of its fine buildings, including the walls of the garden, remain. Having undergone extensive redevelopment, the gardens were officially opened by HRH the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward in 2009 and have also been accredited as a ‘quality assured visitor attraction' by VisitEngland. The gardens are also a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommended garden. The gardens have classic and contemporary features such as; the 'hot' herbaceous border; the blue garden; a sub-tropical walk; and a Victorian style fernery, amongst others. There is also a botanical glasshouse where arid, sub-tropical and tropical plants can be seen and two smaller gardens within the walls (The Bishop's and Australasian Gardens) are areas of real tranquility.

“Nice quiet tea room”

This is a lovely little teas room next to the Walled Garden in Cannington. Prices are good for both drinks and food, staff are always very pleasant and helpful.

Thank you for your review. The Tea Rooms and Gift Shop are free to access even if you don't want to walk round the Gardens if the weather is bad. And with our brand new 'Cheeky Monkey Mondays', there's even more for the children to do! See our website for more information.

“What a great garden”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2012

We went to Canningington at the weekend and had a lovely time. This is a compact garden that is part of a college It is not too big. The planting is fantastic and towards the tropical so it will help to give you a good idea of what can be grown in the south of the UK. They also have several temperate greenhouses showing different types of plants. As well as this there is a veg garden and a plant sales area as well as a small shop. The tea room is welcoming and the cakes are great. Part of the RHS Garden scheme so if you are a member its free, if not the £3.50 entrance fee is great value. You can visit the tea rooms without visiting the gardens.

Originally a walled garden now used by the horticultural students where you can buy plants, take tea or used meander through the gardens. Well worth a visit for the small entrance fee
