“weekend escape”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2012

I was looking for a truly remote escape that would also provide comfortable lodging, good food, and a beautiful surrounding... this was exactly what it said on the tin. The main reason to come here however was to propose to my future wife, and it was all a great success from atop Cadair Idris.
Thank you for being such kind hosts.

I took my boyfriend to The Rectory on the Lake for his birthday as we both wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of London... we had such a wonderful time and even the weather hasn't put us off visiting again. The scenery was breath taking, plenty to see and do if you like the outdoors and I'm already looking forward to a visit again next summer. I think we may have been lucky enough to get one of the best rooms in the house because you could see the lake and mountains from the bed when you woke up in the morning!

John was the perfect host, made us feel instantly relaxed on arrival, makes you feel like you've known him for ages :) Unlike other B&B's they are very flexible at The Rectory, allowing you to dictate the time of your breakfast and dinner. The food cooked by Ricky was also fantastic, a wonderful 4 courses to eat every night, each night the menu different. The breakfast is also to die for... the best eggs benedict ever and there is nothing better than waking up to the scent of grilled bacon on a saturday morning!

Thank you both for welcoming us into your home... Shelley & Ben (Nov 23/25)

Room Tip: Ask for the room overlooking the lake.

My boyfriend and I had only 2 nights in Wales after a conference in Manchester - we booked one night at the Old Rectory on the Lake. We took a little longer than I would have liked to get there mostly due to us sightseeing on the way so we arrived at about 7:30 at night. When we got there it was pretty dark and we realized that I did not reserve dinner for the night - John was absolutely lovely and said that they could do something small for us for dinner even though we didn't make reservations. However sometimes it's better to be lucky than smart - for the first time someone didn't show up for their reservations! We definitely lucked out - Ricky made the best meal we had the whole trip. Great trout, and a good wine as well.

The room was quite nice - the bathroom was quite stunning with a big bathtub. But the best part was definitely the view in the morning. Sheep everywhere and the gorgeous lake. John gave us great advice on which hiking path to take up Cadair Idris. We're already hoping to make another visit back but this time for longer than a night. A really wonderful experience!

Room Tip: We were in the Mynydd Rugog room which was fantastic

We spent a perfect over-night stay in this beautiful B&B. Woke up to amazing views across the lake, two great walks, and the food was simply brilliant. Can't rate it highly enough and we will definitely be returning. Thanks again for a perfect break. O & A

Room Tip: We stayed in mynydd rugog: would definitely recommend. Great views and big bathroom

Stayed here 10 years ago when it was a holiday cottage! The view hasn't changed but the house has. Sumptuous bathrooms with lovely baths. The bedrooms were great although we found the mattresses to be a bit hard. (personal preference) We had dinner on the first night....it was quite delicious. Couldn't fault it! Breakfasts were very good too! We had a lovely stay.

It was great to hear about your experiences when you stayed at The Old Rectory when it used to be let out on a self-contained basis by the hotel opposite, Yes, we have changed the place a tad - hopefully for the better! I really appreciate what you wrote about my food and take on board what you say about the mattress.

I took my girlfriend to see the beauties of Wales where I studied. For Accommodation I looked no further than to The Old Rectory on the lake because my parents have had a great stay there two years ago and a quick peek at the Tripadvisor reviews showed it maintains its high standards.

We stayed in the Craig Coch room. It was spacious and had an absolutely massive bathroom with a bathtub which has a fab blue spotlight underneath. We had a four-course meal at the Old Rectory which not only saved us having to drive miles but made us argue about whether it was our best or second best fine dining experience ever. Compliments to Ricky the chef and many thanks to John who with the help of his videos presented us with probably the best pictures, footage and knowledge of the South Snowdonia.

We climbed Cadair Idris and we do not regret choosing this second-highest peak instead of far-away Snowdon. The only shame is that the weather changes so often and we learned an umbrella is a must. The Welsh weather took us by surprise on more than one occasion!

After our evening meal we jumped in the outside hot tub and watched the stars which was just the perfect last night of our great holiday.

Have a look at a selection of pictures I took during our stay.

Room Tip: For a romantic break I suggest the two upstairs rooms, but you have to book them well in advance.

The Old Rectory on the lake has been overlooking Tal-y-llyn, in south Snowdonia for over a hundred years. This imposing residence stands on the foothills of Cader Idris and offers five star luxurious bed and breakfast accommodation in a stunning setting. We are equidistant between the bustling market towns of Machynlleth and Dolgellau and the delightful coastal village of Aberdyfi. The Old Rectory on the lake has three double letting rooms - all ensuite - and all look out onto the lake. Our bathrooms upstairs were described as being 'outstanding contemporary ensuites' by the Visit Wales inspector when awarding us five stars.Already our culinary reputation is beginning to spread - indeed we have even been mentioned by name in The House of Commons during a debate on Welsh produce. Our chef can cater for any dietary requirement. The Old Rectory on the lake is licensed. We suggest that this is the ultimate place to unwind; the scenery is breath taking and the silence deafening. All our beds have crisp Egyptian cotton sheets and freshly laundered fluffy towels are in every bathroom and also in the sauna and out outdoor hot tub area which - like most of our windows - looks out over the ever changing Talyllyn - enthusiastically penned in our entry in Alistair Sawday's Special Places to Stay book as ' large, lovely and luminous'.We look forward to perhaps welcoming you here very soon. ... more   less
