At £25 per person this lunch in the Garden Room at Park House Hotel Shifnal was a complete rip off. Food was not worth the money. Fish starter looked like it had been divided and shared with someone else, the bread served with it was turning up at the edges and dry. The meat for the main course was processed and thinly sliced. Very disappointing.

We had a magical wedding at the Park House Hotel. It is a lovely old building with great views outside for photos. We had a lot of guests comment about how nice our venue was. We didn’t realise at first, but it is easily accessible by public transport (Shifnal train station is a five minute walk away).

We had a few meetings with Ross, the wedding coordinator, to go through everything we wanted on the day. Ross was really friendly and had everything in hand.

On the day everything went very smoothly. They had plenty of staff on hand in case we needed anything. We were in the smaller suite (the Dobson suite) which we prefered because it’s more intimate. It opens out onto the lawns, so guests can sit outside if they want. We had our own small bar opposite the room, and the main bar to use too.

When we were getting ready the staff phoned us in our rooms if we needed to know anything (like the photographer arriving) and guided us through the ceremony and the speeches.

Overall we are so glad we had our wedding at the Park House, the venue helped make it an amazing day, and I would recommend the Park House to anyone!

There were some negative comments about this hotel as there always seems to be but I took a chance as it was roughly half way between my daughter in Carlisle and us in Lincolnshire. We met up and as we both had dogs I asked for two of the downstairs courtyard rooms which were amazing. The beds were comfortable and the rooms and bathroom very clean. Yes they had not been decorated yesterday but were absolutely great and no doubt the hotel which is large has to work through refurbs as and when. The breakfasts were fantastic and so to the bar meals. It is on a busy road but the car park is huge and you have no idea you are actually on a street! The main bonus which I think other guests have mentioned were amazing, so helpful and professional and went over and above what is normally required. I would like to say a special thank you to Dorothy and Rhian at breakfast and the lovely Josh who seemed to be everywhere we needed him. We will definitely be back as we enjoyed our time there so much.

Room tip: Not sure as we were in the courtyard.

We stayed at the hotel for four nights in order to attend our son's wedding at a venue close by. What struck us was the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff, who must have been picked for their beautiful smiles. We liked the ambience of the hotel, enjoyed the best breakfast buffet ever, and were served delicious evening meals in the restaurant. The only downside was that the room(s) we were allocated had interconnecting single doors, through which could be heard every sound. We did not want either to hear our neighbours' conversations, or to disturb them. It was not an issue for us, but we noticed that there were steps into the dining room, which created a problem for those with mobility problems. It is clearly a popular venue for events. During our short stay there was a wedding, an engagement party and a charity event, so rooms near the functions rooms can be noisy.

Room tip: Ask for a room which does not have a door connecting it to the adjacent room, and is not near the function suite

This was our only staff event of the year so we really wanted and expected something special. We booked a party night with a hypnotist and show girls. We had a table of 16 plus 9 rooms, bed & breakfast, one of which was suite, so the total cost was over £3,000.

Things started to go wrong on arrival when they gave away our suite to one of our guests.

We then found that the show we booked had been changed without telling us or giving us the option to cancel. Instead of the Las Vegas style Show Girls, we had a man doing metalwork with an angle grinder. Was this supposed to be entertaining?

On arrival at our table, we found that we had been put in the corner and only a few of our party could actually see the stage area.

During the meal, we were horrified to find water coming in from the ceiling above our table. We were told that this was “because it was raining”. The staff moved the table about a metre to try to avoid the water but by doing so, they obstructed the fire exit making it unusable and a clear breach of the fire safety regulations. One staff member told us that this was “not the first time this week that this had happened”.

Bottled beers had been provided as ordered but no bottle opener. We were told that there was “Only one bottle opener in the building”. We had to open our beer bottles with the prong of a dinner fork.

Salt and pepper had to be shared with other tables because there was “Not enough for all tables”

We met with the General Manager on the night and raised all these issues with him. He arranged for us to have a few free bottles of beer (but no bottle opener) and promised that the Event Manager would phone me the following week. She didn’t. Nor did she phone the week after or the week after that. After 4 weeks, I tried to call the Event Manager several times but she was always unavailable or on leave and never returned my calls.

Eventually, I got to speak to the Operations Manager who assured me he would sort it out and get back to me within a week. Two weeks later, nothing, so I phoned again and was told it would be referred to their head office. Eventually, a representative from their head office phoned and offered us a derisory £100 in compensation.

All in all, it was an extremely disappointing evening and very poor value for money. The event was badly organised, badly managed and showed little regard for the inconvenience or discomfort of guests. The hotel management give the impression that if things go wrong, it’s just tough luck.

Think very carefully before booking any event at the Park House Shifnal. Be warned.
