Lovely location away from anywhere with lovely views. We stayed in the pink room which was nice- comfortable but in the need for a little sprucing up. We had a package deal which included afternoon tea upon arrival, dinner, champagne and b&b. When we arrived we were greeted by the lovely members of staff who were very helpful and polite. We had a lovely afternoon tea with scones and jam down in the lounge.
The food in the evening was fantastic- I am a vegetarian and a picky eater but didnt find ordering an issue- also were very accomodating to any changes you may want with your meal.
Each course was very good! And there was more than enough to fill you up!
We were definatly the youngest couple there, I am in my mid twenties and my partner in his thirties but we didnt feel out of place or that we were treated any differently.
Breakfast was also very good- cereal and fruit, toast and tea/coffe followed by a choice of hot food- they even had vegetarian sausage and bacon!

Overall we had a great stay- great venue and food. Not a cheap option- bar charges and tea/coffee after dinner are pricey, but compared to other places I have stayed at similar prices it is much better quality.

Second visit to this hotel as we like hill walking and were very impressed with the food first time round. Hotel didn't disappoint. It's on the Welsh border in good walking country - not as popular or well known as the Ludlow area, but probably prettier. The hotel produces printed walks starting from the hotel and we like a pub stop halfway round. (Not as young as we used to be). We used to go to the lakes but can’t manage the big fells anymore, whereas round Pen-y-Dyffryn it’s a bit like Postman Pat country, lots of little hills that we can still get to the top of.
They do tea and cake when you get back in but we waited for the evening meal most days which is as good as we have had anywhere. My son and his partner have also been here on our recommendation, and they liked it too. Will be back.

Firstly, let us just say that we stayed at Pen y Dyffryn for Valentines the previous year (2010) and had such a wonderful time that we immediately booked for the following year (2011). In 2010, we stayed in one of the bedrooms out in the adjoining Coach House, which almost felt like having your own private chalet. It was extremely cozy - all shag rugs and chenille throws; the dinner menu was unadventurous but perfectly nice and we were very happy customers.

Therefore, we decided to upgrade this year and treat ourselves to the Champagne Room with ensuite Japanese Spa bath, which cost quite a bit more but was a much bigger room. The room itself was certainly very large and pretty but lacked the coziness of the one we'd had last year, with much of the warmth lost in such a huge room so it was quite chilly. The Spa Bath itself was lovely but the rest of the bathroom not particularly impressive in decor and we felt it a shame that the lights cannot be dimmed in the bathroom or partially turned off, so you have to bathe with fullbeam lighting all the way down and spotlights above the bath which is hardly romantic!

Our main beef was with Dinner. Whilst the menu was much more adventurous than last year (featuring venison, game, soup with scrambled eggs etc.), the service went rather wrong. We gave our orders, but proceeded to be served AFTER three different tables who came in after us!! This included the fact that they were served water and bread before us (we actually had to ask for it or we wouldn't have been brought any!) and it happened for starter, main and dessert, meaning that it took an hour and a half before our main meal was served. The couple who came in 30mins after us had finished their whole meal when we were still waiting for our dessert! The chef forgot the scrambled egg in my soup and my husband's venison was distinctly overcooked, so we were not particularly happy....especially as the whole point of treating ourselves to the more expensive room was to spend time together in it as a rare treat without the children, not spend our evening waiting for food to arrive!!!

We were told this was because the other 3 couples had pre-ordered their food at the Bar beforehand. However, nobody had thought to advise us that we might like to do this. We also know that in the case of at least one couple it was simply not true as they were sat opposite us and we heard them deliberating what to order and placing their orders!!

We had an upsetting suspicion that our age may have accounted for the poor service: both my husband and I look a lot younger than we actually are, and the clientele at Pen y Dyffryn are generally far older. Whilst this did not bother us in the slightest, perhaps it accounted for why we were treated with less respect than others. This suspicion was, unfortunately, confirmed in a comment by the Owner's wife who mentioned that her son who was "about our age" had recently set up a business which "might suit us better, being primarily a pub with a range of beers". We both found this stereotyping of young couples rather offensive as we are both business people and parents who like to get away to nice hotels, enjoy good food (with gotod service!!!) and quality time together. It rather felt like we were being told we were the wrong "type" for this hotel!!

A great pity, as it has rather tarred our first fond visit. We won't be coming back.

We had a wonderful, peaceful and delicious break at Pen-y-Dyffryn and hope to return -- perhaps when the weather is a little kinder. The owners and their friendly staff made us feel extremely welcome, the chef produced miraculous food and our overall experience could not have been bettered.

We have visited Pen-Y-Dyffryn on three occasions and always enjoyed our time there.
The lounge, sitting room and dinning area are comfortable and cosy. The evening meals very tasty, but with a limited choice of vegetables. The same vegetables are presented for whatever meal is chosen, which is a shame as the food is generally well presented and served by pleasant ,helpfull staff. The breakfast however, is a different story. On our last two visits the breakfast has been, quite frankly, poor. fruggal and worst of all, barely warm! Guests at ajoining tables also commented on the this. A quiet word to a member of staff brought no response!
We have always stayed in the "Coach House" rooms which are comfortable and nicely furnished.
When we returned home we recieved an email thanking us for our visit and asking us to comment on our stay.
I have never posted anything like this on the internet and I do so reluctantly as I do realise that some people complain about just anything., but as I have not recieved any response from the hotel following my comments, I believe the owners are now resting on their laurels, and are maybe a little complacent following so many good reviews.
A lovely location and some very good aspects to the Hotel generally, but let down by poor outside maintainance. Crumbling steps, green algal growth on flaking walls. metal and wood garden furniture which you would not want to sit on as they are rusting and covered in unsightly green algal growth and peeling varnish. The outside area needs some work and a good clean up.
The rooms require a good cleaning. The bed side lamps for instance were thick with dust and grime. not exceptable i'm afraid. In the sitting room area. the casement windows had last summers dead flys and wasps scattered along them.
I have photographes of all of this and they make poor viewing.
We were initialy charged for wine that should have been include, not given the 5% discount for being previous visitors, and I believe £10.40 for one G&T and a beer is expensive even for hotel prices!
If the managment had responded in some way I would not have felt the need to post this comment, but they ask for comments only to ignore them it seems.
In summary, Pen-y-Dyffryn is worth a visit and we hope to return,
We hope that these few issues, very easily, and cheaply resolved, are addressed, and that they continue to be successful.

We have just returner from an overnight stay at this marvellous hotel. The setting, staff and food are all first class.

Upon arrival we were shown to our lovely room in the annexe, which had its own patio area with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. After unpacking, we were served tea in one of the comfortable lounges, and after taking in some local sights, we were treated to the most wonderful dinner in the restaurant.

Believe the other reviews and give it a try, you will not be dissappointed.
