“A trip to celebrate Mothers day and Gluten Free”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

My husband and I stayed here during Mothers day weekend March 2013. We booked via internet and had a good deal for double room and breakfast.
Being a Coeliac I rang the hotel before arriving requesting gluten free items for Breakfast, I do like a cooked breakfast.
They provided GD bread for toast and GF sausages for the cooked breakfast ( happy days). While staying we requested that they organize a "high" tea for 6 persons on Mothers day - which they did I can say they the tea was lovely with sandwiches and cakes, and a Shropshire cream tea. They also provided a Gluten free one for me at a reasonable cost.
Staff very friendly and accommodating.
Accommodation:- although a little tired and the room could do with up dating in the pluming and bathroom department it was comfortable and warm.

Did not use the spa as busy visiting family but will do so on my next visit.

Stayed recently for a single night and first impressions were good. The bowling green and off street secure parking for a town centre hotel was a great start. The entrance was also perfectly fine next to the bar and restaurants. Then you got the rooms. Corridors are narrow and twisty so if you have a lot of bags it could be difficult. This is an old building so to be fair it was expected. The room I received was tiny and this was the biggest issue. It was also dated in decor. That being said it was clean, warm and everything worked. No problems with the standard of everything it was just dated and small.

I have 2 problems with rooms however. first the TV was so high up the wall you couldn't really see the picture clearly. LCDs have to be at eye level or you lose the picture if viewing from below. The TV was opposite the bed but to see th e picture you need to stand up. Not good. Lower the tv down the wall and all will be fine!

Secondly the bathroom, in particular the loo. I am over 6ft. To put it delicately I couldnt sit straight down on the loo as the wall was so close to the pan I just couldn't fit. I had to approach from the side and swivel! I felt I was on a budget airline. That being said, if I was drunk and fell asleep on the loo I would have been fine as it was easy to rest my head.

Breakfast was lovely albeit a little expensive as seems to be the norm these days for hotels.

We stayed for two nights over one weekend at the start of February. Whilst I agree with some earlier reviewers that the decor and furniture is a little dated our room was well appointed and comfortable, particularly the bed which had one of the best mattresses we have experienced in hotel rooms. The room even had a little balcony with decking and patio furniture, although early February was not a good time to take advantage of this facility.

We received a warm welcome when we arrived and all the staff were friendly, helpful and courteous throughout our our stay. The provision of access to the Spa and Fitness Club was a real bonus. We both enjoyed using the pool and the jacuzzi and my wife has two treatments during our stay which she thoroughly enjoyed. Again the staff ensured that could relax and enjoy our use of the facilities. The quality and cost of using this facility were excellent value for money.

Whilst we did not have dinner at the hotel this time, we did have breakfast on both days and a snack in the bar for lunch on Sunday. The food was excellent and beautifully cooked. The next time we stay we will make sure we have dinner in the Four Seasons restaurant. We also thought that for a 4 star hotel the quality and price were good.

We enjoyed our stay at The Wynnstay and in Oswestry so much we will definitely be visiting again in the future.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the first floor and at the back of the hotel overlooking the bowling green.

The decor, communal facilities and our room were all rather dated and in need of considerable upgrade to fully qualify for four stars. A random, free standing electric convector heater in the bedroom is not a good omen, nor is the lack of double glazing, especially in the bathroom which was freezing cold (hence the electric heater). A trouser press on the wall which didn't work as the timing switch is broken, carpet joins gapping and freying, rather old fashioned plumbing, massive high ceiling and old, dark wooden furniture complete the picture of an outdated hotel, much in need of some investment.
Having said that, the staff were excellent; efficient and very friendly. We only ate breakfast there, which was very good, with a choice of superb, local produce, beautifully cooked. Our room was clean, with a comfortable bed, fabulous towels and everything needed for a short stay.
The swmming pool & spa are in a different building however, which is some way from the main hotel, so a morning swim entails too much effort to make it worth while, especially on a cold morning!
Overall, for a quick, one-night stay, the hotel was convenient and reasonably priced with good parking facilities considering where it is in the town centre.

Room Tip: Pick a first floor room unless you love stairs!

Our room was a good size. We got to look at several rooms and most were very nice.
However unlike sunnockian 55 our room was near the christmas party with live band and disco so we asked to move, when we heard them doing a sound check by our back window. Unfortunately they had omitted to mention that the VERY loud christmas funfair was outside from that evening until 10pm, so we had to eat in the bar rather than the restaurant. By 10.30 we moved rooms into one at the front so we were away from the party - and only had the usual disturbance from the pub that has live music to the left of the front. By comparison this was mild and the staff had been helpful but, since they knew all this would be going on, they could have mentioned it, althouigh they didn't know we were there for a quiet overnight stay, away from the city!!

Room Tip: avoid the front, unless they have a function on themselves.

After hours of driving through heavy rain, it was nice to receive a warm welcome on arrival. When asked how our journey had been, we couldn't honestly answer anything but ''awful'' but we got a smile and were quickly registered.
We had requested a first floor room, which was certainly a good choice as we didn't have too far to carry our bags. At the front of the hotel, late in the night, it was a little noisy - revellers (or smokers) outside on the street - but otherwise comfortable. Only one oddity, we couldn't find a way to turn the main lights (bright overhead spots above the bed) off without turning off the bedside lamp (of which there was only one). There were very big Christmas parties on both the Friday and Saturay nights but the effect of the music was not felt particularly severely. Although the bar was very full before the crowds moved into the ballroom around 8 pm, we were then able to find a table in the bar to order some dinner.

Room Tip: Choose first floor so as not to carry bags too far. Rooms on the front may have occasional noise fro...

This was a one night stay whilst on business and I did not have time to sample the spa facilities. Receptionist was exceptionally helpful and welcoming. The room was at the front of the hotel and was comfortable and clean but a little tired. The fixed radiator did not work and an electric convector had been provided. The room was not too noisy but I think that the rooms at the back of the hotel are quieter.
I would go back again if I was visiting Oswestry.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter.
