“Mid-week break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2013

My girlfriend and I stayed here for three nights in late November and can throughly recommend it. We came to relax and to see a few things, visit friends and take in the countryside. The rooms are in a converted barn at the rear of the pub, and are warm and comfortable and generous in size. The staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful, we turned up early on Monday when they are technically shut, but they still let us in to our room etc. The food is delicious with the same amount of thought and presentation given to the breakfast as was given to supper, with the same calibre of service which was made our stay even better. You get the impression they really value their customers, unlike many other places. We spent one late afternoon/evening in the pub in front of the fire which was exactly what we wanted to be doing after a long day.
The village is pretty and very quiet, and well located for Lambourn or the Ridgeway. We could have happily eaten at The Star everynight but had been recommended the nearby Eyston Arms at East Hendred which is also excellent.

We dropped in for a drink Saturday lunch. The menus sounded so delicious we decided to stay for a light lunch. The food is superb and although the menus are small, they're well put together, dishes are seasonal and beautifully served with great flavour and lack of fuss. The staff are extremely friendly and passionate about their food. Only sorry that the Star isn't our local. Thank you for a great lunch, we'll be back.

Room Tip: We didn't stay as they were full but had a quick look at the rooms for future visits and they...

8 of us dined on Friday night on the 2 courses and a bottle of wine for 2 @£40. Initially we were sceptical since there was no choice, only whitebait, interestingly with Marie Rose sauce and then loin of lamb with pesto and vegetables.

This comes with mini warmed loaves of bread and our initial thoughts were that the portions might have been a little small. How wrong, the starter combination worked and the delight was the best pink, non-fatty lamb with the most amazing garlicky pesto and "dauphinoise". No waste and a huge success from all 8 of us. We did weaken and had deserts which were excellent. The white and red house wine with the offer was also very good.
Highly recommended.

There are a number of inns hidden away in the Downs near Wantage and this one is very good quality indeed.

The Star's welcoming staff readily and naturally smile and look genuinely pleased to be able to help customers.

We consumed a bottle of La Delfina Pinot Grigio (£17) between the three of us and it was remarkably refined for the price.

My starter was a Cornish Crab Salad £6.95 which had a lovely hint of lemon which came through from the salad. The consistency of the crab was excellent. Tasty and light.
For entree we wanted to do a "burger test" to compare with what we have been offered nearer home. The result was that the Star's angus beef burger compared very well indeed. Obviously home made the meat content was not only succulent but also flavoured perfectly. The bonus was that it arrived in a toasted bun baked on the premises and also fries and tomato relish (£9). I added grated cheese (£0.75)

Some may say this is expensive for a pub but when the scene is set with linen napkins wrapped in string and fresh warm rolls arrive gratis in a material bag this raises the bar. Factor in the charming staff and this is a very good location indeed with an equally good product.

We found this pub by chance when we were walking in the area. We were pleasantly surprised by the modern interior and fresh decoration, in this old building in the heart of the village. We were a party of four adults and two children and all found something we wanted on the menu . All the food was beautifully served looking good and all proved tasty.
The restaurant was spacious but today were the only people eating lunch . The service was relaxed and the waiter pleasant .

The star inn is a lovely quiet country pub. The chef and part investor Dave, is a really nice pleasant host. He is also a fantastic chef! He serves up five star quality dishes what you could expect from top restaurants in London. He and the staff we met were very friendly and welcoming. The star inn itself could do with a splash of colour to add some atmosphere as its very white and clinical but saying that very clean. Our stay was very relaxing and the beds are comfortable. The rooms could do with some more luxurious fittings to enhance the quality of the stay, but overall a very lovely time was had by all of our group. We will return in the future and tell our friends of our wonderful time there. I wouldn't recommend it for young children though unless they are into country side walking.
