Description: The Birdcage, serving award winning pies by Pieminister and premium Craft & Speciality beer is located in Thame's town centre. Built around 1300 it has fortunately retained its structural character and many of the elm beams, once covered in ancient plaster, have been exposed creating the historical atmosphere inside and out. During the Napoleonic wars, the Birdcage housed French prisoners who incidentally founded the local Masons. In fact, for many years it was used as a holding house for petty thieves and criminals, even lepers on the upper floors! Of course stories handed down from generation to generation have only enhanced its eerie reputation of being haunted by some of these troubled souls!

Pub is really old and not posh but steaks are the best. Good selection of beers. Desserts a bit on the large side for us so we share.
Pub doesn't welcome children, fine by us.

We've eaten here three times over the last year and enjoyed it every time. They offer speciality steaks and so far between the four of us we have had crocodile, muflon, llama, ostrich, bison, water buffalo, camel and those are the ones I can remember! The trick is to order in advance and/or go to the earlier sitting as you may find that you desired steak has all gone if you don't. The steaks are seared first in the kitchen and then you cook them yourself on a scarily hot stone that each steak is served on. We usually have chips and I can't remember them being anything other than what I expected. They also have a selection of speciality beers. The service has always been been good. There is a bar out front and a small restaurant area to the rear which is pleasant enough for what is basically a pub. I anticipate another visit there in a couple of weeks time when our son comes back from Uni!

Today we visited the restaurant, and whilst the staff was very friendly and attentive the food was absolutely awful! I had tuna which was old smelling and stale. It came with 3 pots of sauces from a jar. My husband ordered the ribs, which were covered in an orange sauce that was "disgusting" and the chips were frozen! The ketchup was even cheap. We would usually of had pudding but after the main course experience we were just desperate to leave. We both now are not feeling well at all from the meal. We would never return.

As a non meat eater I ordered a plate of nachos - well, the gaucamole and salsa were both out of a jar and absolutely disgusting! It really isn't difficult to make fresh salsa and guacamole, very disappointing!

Went here on a Saturday night with friends and to be honest didn't enjoy it and wouldn't go back - or if we did it would only be on a week night when they offer the special menu for 2. The food just wasn't good value and to have to pay an extra £2.99 a portion for undercooked fries was not ok - also the same price for a small bowl of mixed leaves - just straight out of a bag we suspect. The service wasn't great either - just too intrusive - we had barely sat down when we were being asked for our order and all evening we felt as if they just wanted us to eat and go - maybe they had another table coming in - but the restaurant wasn't that full, but in the end we just got up and left as soon as we could. Expensive for what it was. The wine was nice though.
