Description: The Birdcage, serving award winning pies by Pieminister and premium Craft & Speciality beer is located in Thame's town centre. Built around 1300 it has fortunately retained its structural character and many of the elm beams, once covered in ancient plaster, have been exposed creating the historical atmosphere inside and out. During the Napoleonic wars, the Birdcage housed French prisoners who incidentally founded the local Masons. In fact, for many years it was used as a holding house for petty thieves and criminals, even lepers on the upper floors! Of course stories handed down from generation to generation have only enhanced its eerie reputation of being haunted by some of these troubled souls!

Popped in here for a few drinks and was amazed at the collection of beers they had. They had wall to wall fridges full of bottles of beer from all over the world - you just pick the one you want and they pour it.. We picked a nice sounding Belgium beer and was very impressed. You could easily spend all night sampling them all.

The building itself inside wasnt anything to shout about. Typical sort of pub but it didnt have much of an atmosphere. It was reasonably quiet on a Friday night so im guessing the locals go elsewhere!

Certainly worth a look.

For the better. Have not ate in The Birdcage for some years as was served a glass full of wine with sediment and the barman refused to chage it claiming it to be 'Normal'

This time around the atmosphere was comfortable, we sat in a secluded booth, service was good, very attentive, and the food, though not Michelin Star material was very well presented and tasty. Also reasonably priced.

Would go back

We visited last month (february) for the first time. The experience of the 'cook your own meat' was a little daunting at first however, it was great fun and cooked really quickly. We sizzled our own mushrooms also.
The heating had unfortunately broken down which lead to a cold and unrelaxed experience but would go back to try again although we thought that for the price of the food it is a shame the surroundings are not a little more luxurious. Locals sat around with their dogs. It felt very spit and sawdust like, but to be fair it wasnt helped due to the lack of heat. We ate and left as soon as possible. Paid £63 for two. One drink each and one steak meal each. Dont let this put you off, the food really is good quality. Staff very friendly.

The Birdcage claims to be the oldest pub in Thame and is probably the most upmarket one. It serves a number of real ales, lagers and cider on tap as well as over 200 different bottled beers from all over the world. The wine list also contains options from all parts of the globe.

Regarding the restaurant, the defining feature is the Black Rock Grill and this is normally the reason why Mrs Fatbear2000 and I would go to the Birdcage to eat. This is a very hot rock on which you can cook your selected meat to the way you like it. There are a number of exotic options available, such as Kangaroo, Zebra, Llama etc but we stick to the Filet Steak, which has always been of a very high quality. The meat comes with a small tray of sauces ( mayonnaise, brown sauce and a sweat and sour sauce ) but any extras need to be separately ordered. Personally, I think the 2.99 GBP charged for the mixed leaves is a bit over the top, so I normally go for the Wedges or the Onion Rings !

It is also possible to ordered a number of different types of burgers, which come served in a basket and there is also a limited bar menu of snacks and sandwiches. However, you do not need to go to the restaurant area to order the Black Rock Grill as you can see in the bar area and order from the main menu. The smell from another table when a Black Rock Grill has been served in the bar is always tempting……
