“Great room, could do better on the breakfast”
Reviewed April 23, 2013

Overall, I recommend this hotel, there's a small free pool and a good gym, comfortable rooms and ample parking. However, there were only 2 of us in for breakfast, but there were already 10 fried eggs ageing gracefully when we arrived; they even got a stir from the chef. Most hotels will cook you a fresh egg these days and it doesn't seem much to expect in a hotel that's generally of a good standard. It would also be nice to know where the ingredients are sourced.

Dear bobCornwall,
Thank you for your comments. Our guests generally expect us to be prepared at breakfast, many of whom are often requiring quick efficient service before starting work, so breakfast items are cooked as freshly as they can be but ready for arriving guests.
Kind regards,

This hotel is a regular overnight for my self as my head office is nearby, the staff are top drawer, well trained, keen to help, and always welcoming.
The location is excellent, the rooms are clean and some are very nicely decorated, some are a touch dated but they are by no means unacceptable.
The food is great, we have had a few conferences here and they have always been well organised and we've been we'll fed.
It's just a great mid range hotel, well done.

I stayed here over the Easter period and booked a 'q' style room. The room was big with a bed a bit bigger than a super king bed, sitting area, walk in wardrobe and a fridge that was restocked every day. The food was tasty and there was a good choice on the menu for breakfast and evening meal. I wouldn't hesitate in going back to the hotel.

If you wish to visit Oxford itself there is a park and ride 10 minutes from the hotel which I would recommend instead of driving into the centre itself. It is also free if are parking just for a few hours. We spent 5 hours in Oxford itself. We also went into the centre of London from the local train station which took an hour both ways.

This is a fabulous hotel, well presented in what appears to be a remote location, but in fact it’s right on the M40 corridor. This was my second stay and although twelve miles away from my destination, it was worth the extra miles. The food in the bar and room is limited but with a varied selection it caters for all palettes. It is of good quality and again this quality, is mirrored in the delightful breakfast selection. The rooms are of a generous size and have the usual drink making facilities, iron & hairdryer. The Wi-Fi is free of charge to guests but can be a little slow. The beds are very comfortable, with a decent weight duvet and several pillows. The hotel is popular as a conferencing centre and as such is often busy with large groups of company staff, however this is well managed and should not spoil your enjoyment. .

At first one imagined that the light grey suited friendly young men in identical ties must be part of the wedding party that occupied much of the ground floor of the hotel. However they greeted you so enthusiastically and offered help that one realised they were part of the establishment. I was just sorry that I could not produce a reason that might necessitate their aid. Such is life.
On a more mundane level the room we had was perfect. Large, well furnished and equipped, with an excellent bathroom and a helpful porter(unfortunately not one of the aforementioned young men but charming nevertheless) named Derek who demonstrated all the technical aspects of our room. The view over the garden was outstanding.
Sorry to end on a low note, especially as I did not man-up and express my concern to the hotel at the time, the breakfast room and breakfast was disappointing, cold plates cold food on both mornings! I hate to say this but it could not hold a candle to the Ilford Premier Inn breakfast that we had eaten on the two previous days.

Room Tip: Room 360 was the one we had and was certainly superior to those we have been allocated previously, a...

This is a bit of a mixed one for me. Firstly we are in the middle of a two night stay at the hotel for our anniversary. The first room we had (223) was large but suffered badly from noise. It's on one of the main corridors between the reception and other rooms. So there were frequently people passing by many of which gave no consideration to other guests in their noise levels. Now whilst this isn't the hotels problem the rattling of the room from any door closing in the block is.

Added to this noise was a family of what sounded like large birds in the roof above. From first light any time the hotel fell quiet they decided to squawk and tap. Tapping that sounded like someone knocking on the door.

So first thing in the morning I was down to reception to request a move. Here's where the difference between an average hotel and a good can be found (dealing with problems).

I was shown two alternative rooms in what could have been more quiet areas of the hotel. I choose the one the furthest from reception and with what seemed like less rooms for people to walk past to get. Seems I made a good choice as so far it is much better. Room is slightly smaller and laid out so that the bathroom is between the entrance and the bed. This seems to isolate you from most of the noise.

The second thing the hotel did right was to ask if we were eating there and offer us a drink. We weren't but took them up on the offer of a drink from the bar.

On the subject of the bar, food prices are on the pricey side with a plate of nachos (which were nothing special) coming in at £8.50

So onto the spa. Our initial experience wasn't the best. We'd booked some slots a couple of weeks before our stay and said we'd firm up what treatments nearer the time. We looked on the hotel web site and got information on what treatments there were but no information on how long each of these took. I emailed the hotel a few days before our stay but we hadn't had a reply by the time we checked in.

The information provided by the spa on the treatments could do with being beefed up. More description needed and a better photocopier as what was provided gave a name for the treatment but nothing much else and was almost illegible.

The spa treatments themselves were OK however there were issues. The room where my wife had her pedicure had a dirty floor (not ideal when you are trying to make your feet look their best!). The bench they had in there was also too high for her to reach the soak tray (she's fairly avg height). She then hurt her shoulder trying to push herself up onto the bench.

The lounge is a little undersized for the number of treatment rooms and both times we visited people were having to stand. We also got short-changed with the time that treatments were advertised and what we got. This even included our prep time.

As has already been mentioned the room around the pool is limited and we ended up coming back to our room to relax.

As I am writing this review there was a knock on the door and the hotel just gave us each a gift pack from the spa to say happy anniversary. This included a £30 voucher for buying products from their on-line range. A very nice touch.

So back to where I was... Breakfast was very good, a wide selection for everyone and at weekends they serve until 11am which is most welcome.

All the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful with the exception of the staff manning the spa reception. The couple we spoke to seemed to have a distinct lack of knowledge about the treatment details. One even had a badge on saying "senior spa ..."! There was also a general lack of flexibility in treatment choices. It took a while to get agreement for a minor massage variation (to remove head from the full body massage). This should have been an "of course, no problem" conversation.

The final thing I would say is about the hotel name. I didn't come here because of it as I used to live in Oxford so know the area but I imagine others may well do. Being 10 miles plus outside Oxford it should really be called the OxfordSHIRE Belfry.

Overall the hotel is worth staying at however it could work harder to pull itself above the good and into the great.

Room Tip: not 223 or any on a main corridor to other rooms. Rooms at the far back are a longer walk but look...

Been to this hotel a few times on a Spa deal. By no means is the Spa partcular large, but it has the basics, Steam and Hot Room, small pool and a few rooms for treatments. The resturant serves good food and has a large selection of wines.

The service is really good from all staff memebers, i only had a small issue with one of the staff members in the Spa (who was a newbie), where both the general manager and staff manager contacted me and made amends, which is a change from the norm and other hotel chains.

They also have some large rooms (suites) which are priced as standard and their suites they do have, have noteable extras (like two en-suites with one jacuzzi)

Shopping is a short drive away if you are looking for an outlet village West of London...

if there was going to make a change or addition they should add some live "light" music in the bar area on saturdays, just seems there's nothing much to do after dinner, which is a shame.

Room Tip: Ask for a Suite (if you are bing cheeky) or a corner room.
