“A great birthday experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2013

We visited the Kingham Plough for my 40th birthday in February 2013. We were greeted by a very chatty and friendly barman (co-owner) who gave us an excellent run down of the day's menu. Turned out his wife is chef patron and 'star' of soon to be broadcast Great British Menu (South West region). We were offered drinks prior to being seated - six of us with our four legged friend! - and I was given an extra glass of fizz for my birthday! We were seated at the table and welcomed with warm bread and butter and a pig's ear for the dog, a very nice touch. Starters were yummie and the mains were too. We went for the cheese board for dessert and the kids were accomodated with a blend of icecream and shortbread. All together, a round of drinks + two courses for four adults + a cheese board and three courses for the kids + two bottles of decent wine was £300 including a tip. Perhaps slightly on the expensive side (hence four instead of five stars) but definitely worth the investment. The patron also promised to send us a signed copy of the days menu by his wife (she was abroad at the time) so we'll see if that arrives. If it does, I might be tempted to max out my rating.... ;)

“Overpriced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2013

We visited here after a long time and I must say how things have changed!! The staff are lovely, welcoming and can not do enough for you, a slight mix up with our order was rectified immediately. The food is nice but I feel overpriced for what it is, but all in all wel, with a visit especially for a treat.

“Pretensious, expensive and average”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2013 via mobile

The food is average at best; the cooking method, although modern, seems to suck the life and sole out of the food. You are left with a dish that lacks any kind of sparkle or life. The pigeon I had as a main, for example, was more like eating a warm sausage.

If the food was average the prices are no better. If they charged a bit less you would forgive them a little. However to charge nearly £10 for a tiny starter is ill advised.

I can see they have aspirations of a Michilin star; however at present they come up short. Reduce the prices, get some life back into the food, and drop the pretentious attitude.

“Great find for lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2013

We were staying inthe Cotswolds for a few days and read in Cotswold Life that the Plough had won Best Pub in the Cotswolds (and it appears from further reading a number of other awards as wels) - so decided to check it out for ourselves! Although it was very quiet - not surprising really for an freezing icy Tuesday lunchtime in January - we were made to feel very welcome by the lovely chatty Assistant Manager and sat beside a roaring log fire. Bar snacks were excellent and a bit different to the normal offerings of sandwiches and paninnis! We had homemade sausage roll with homemade ketchup, and freshly cooked cod fingers, plus a bowl of triple cooked chips! Other items on offer were handraised pork pie, clams and bacon, sausages - all fresh and locally sourced. There are also some really good real ales on offer. Would love to return at some point in the future to eat in the restaurant and perhaps even stay overnight.

“Superb lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2013

Read about the Plough in a Cotswold magazine. Made a booking for yesterday. Received like an old friend...even though this was the first time here. It was freezing outside but the two fires warmed me up instantly. A large range of board specials, how I settled on the dumplings for entree and the Hereford beef burger with Gloucester cheese. Excellent quality ingredients .... Totally delicious. I wish The Plough was my local pub! Would come back in a heart beat.
