“Not impressed at all...”
Reviewed March 5, 2014

As we have recently moved to the area we were searching out new places to eat as we prefer to eat out most evenings. We decided to try The Plough in Clanfield as it is local, only to find a self righteous pompous manager scowling at us as we approached the bar. Our original intention was to have a drink at the bar while we decided what we were going to do food wise. We bought our first drinks and I honestly thought that we had done something wrong as this man peering over his glasses had no manners and almost in a childish huff asked 'yes?' instead of hello. We were dressed smartly, very quiet and had only walked in so I can't imagine what we had done to deserve this behaviour. This behaviour continued so we drank our drink as fast as we could and didn't bother eating there. What a horrible yet totally unnecessary experience. Perhaps it's a local pub for local people...take our advice try somewhere else! Good manners cost nothing! Bad manners turns customers away and I shall actively discourage people to not go there should they suggest it! What a horrible experience!

We booked this hotel for a short, last minute trip to the Oxfordshire countryside based on the good reviews and beautiful pictures. We were not disappointed.

We arrived late on the Friday night and although we had missed dinner, they would have been happy to provide us with sandwiches or a cheeseboard, we had already eaten so declined the offer.

We booked a superior double room (room 7), we were on the 1st floor and had a corner room. The room was very spacious with a giant superkingsize bed, sofa, flatscreen TV, furniture and a decent size bathroom including bath. The room was very clean and overlooked the gardens.

The staff in the hotel were very friendly and accomodating. Always smiling and ready to help with any queries or concerns.

Breakfast was included in our room price and was lovely. A nice selection of continental favourites available to chose from and also a cooked breakfast menu cooked fresh for you (there is also an option to have breakfast delivered to your room). The food was delicious. We had an evening meal at the hotel as well (not included in the room). The restaurant was a lovely setting, perfect for romantic meals for two. The menu had a wide selection of foods to suit all tastes, all the food was cooked to an excellant quality.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definately reccomend this to anyone looking for a peaceful countryside escape.

This was the third time that we have stayed at the Plough Hotel in Cranfield. As ever it delivered good service, good food, a great welcome and was snug and cosy.

The staff at the dreadful Fairmont Hotel in Monte Carlo (where we have a disasterous Christmas stay) should come and stay here to learn how to properly deliver good service.

As a place to come and have a warn, welcoming snuggly winter break, this is the place to choose. The fact that it had no 3G coverage in the middle of no where was a real plus point for me!

I booked this hotel as a birthday treat for my wife. I wanted something in the Cotswolds but within easy driving distance to Oxford as I wanted to take my wife there after checking out. The location was perfect as its about a 30 min drive from the city.

I booked a 2014 deal, which required that you had a 3 course evening dinner. I also upgraded to a 4 poster room.

When arriving, I was a little disappointed with the look of the outside of the building as the pictures on the website made i look a lot nicer. The inside was typical of an old coaching house and the bar was extremely cosy with comfy chairs in front of two log fires. Perfect for relaxing and trying some of the 130 different gins on offer at the bar. Don't worry, if you dont drink gin then there is a wide choice of malt whisky and a fully stocked wine cellar. Also the hooky was a decent pint too!!

The hotel staff were very helpful and friendly. The heating hadn't come on in our room when we checked in but was sorted quickly and when we came down for dinner, we were placed in the middle of the bar, having already emailed ahead and requested a room in the restaurant. We asked to be moved and we were without any problems. This may have been an issue on busier weekends as the restaurant only as a small numberof tables available and we would have been extremely disappointed to eat a romantic meal in the middle of the bar area.

The room was excellent, and the 4 poster bed was lovely and comfortable. The dimmer switch for the lights was also a welcome touch. The bathroom was really big and the only fault with the room was that we had to wait a long time for any hot water when using the shower.

The 3 course dinner was very good. Its a shame that we had to have all 3 courses as part of the deal as we both were really full after the starters and main course. I had soup to start and my wife had the muscles. For main course I had the steak, which was excellent and my wife had the venison. Although she enjoyed the food, it was a bit rich and she wished that she had chosen the fish. But no complaints apart for no room for pudding..!!

Inside, the hotel could do with a lick of paint and the carpets on the stairs and landings were looking tired. However these are only small issues for what was a really lovely weekend away.

Got an unexpected discount offer for a night at The Plough.
I wasn't really sure whether we should go or not as the weather was miserable.
However really glad we did as it really cheered us up. Quintessential English country hotel, lovely room, lovely meal and cheerful service.

We spent a really lovely Sunday night / Monday morning here on the 'Lazy Sunday' offer. It's so nice to be able to have a good meal out without worrying about the driver not being able to enjoy a glass of wine - or worrying about the cost of a taxi home.

The staff were really helpful right from the time of booking, so we had exactly the type of room we wanted. We didn't expect much - some hotels inly include the most awful rooms in offers - but were delighted with the one we stayed in. It was spacious, well equipped and comfortable.

The food was excellent, with a lovely menu - but the veggie option was a bit limited - and a good wine list. The service was good and prices were very reasonable. Breakfast was just as good.

Looking forward to another lazy Sunday at the Plough!

Had a superb one night break here. Clanfield is a very pleasant village. A feature of the hotel is the Gin Pantry and we were overwhelmed by the choice,, but could have explored more than one, but an excellent bottle of champers on arrival had already done the trick. The starters and mains were good, limited veggie option of one meal , but puds were disappointingly heavy.

We stayed in room 9 which was well appointed but you need to be under 5ft 7 to use the shower with ease as it is tucked behind a roof beam! For the price of the room, this basic should have been thought of!
