Description: The Cotswold Plough is a perfect example of a 16th Century, stylish yet informal hotel. The hotel is perfectly located to explore landmark Cotswold towns, the rolling countryside and the Dreaming Spires of Oxford. Bampton, home to Downton Abbey, is right on the doorstep, Burford only 15 mins away and is the nearest hotel to Kelmscott Manor home to William Morris in 1878. The Cotswold Plough has 11 elegant, confortable and spacious en-suite bedrooms, a restaurant and a bar serving local ales, quality everyday dining options, open fires and a sunshine terrace for Al fresco dining. The hotel offers something for everyone all year round, with an idyllic charm that allows guests to relax in comfort and there is free Wifi throughout. The restaurant serves an a la cate menu of seasonal mouth-watering dishes. Whereas the bar offers a more traditional British menu and the hotel's most unique offering: a Gin Pantry with over 150 individual gins and an incomparable knowledge of these drinks and their accompaniments.

“Not the best”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2012

On arrival the table for four we had booked was not on the sheet, a table was available and given to us though.

At first service was good quick and helpful but after our first drinks we had to wait with empty glasses and even walk to the bar to ask for staff to come over and take drinks orders.

Although the standard of the food was ok it was nothing special. Starters were nicely balanced dishes. For mains the lamb was cooked well but pork and pheasant were both over cooked and a bit dry in places. Two of our group ordered white chocolate cheesecake for desert which tasted disgusting and was sent back to the kitchen. These 2 dishes were taken off our bill and after questioning a member of staff why it was so bad we were told that the chef had tested it and was sorry to say but it had gone off!

Because of the desert problem a complimentary round of drinks would have been a good gesture, but never came. Also for a place calling itself a gin house i found the staff knew very little about the gins they sold.

Some points were good but for every good there was a bad. Definitely room for improvement. Will not be hurrying back.

The Plough is a delightful Oxfordshire gastro-pub. Helpful staff and a good menu plus a nice place for an over-night stay. Recommend it highly...

“Great Cotswold hotel to eat and stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2012

Stayed here on Sunday night, in the top four poster room, as well as an evening meal.

The room was great - no complaints there.

The food was brilliant. Quite a 'quality' menu - with a good selection of food. The staff were very polite and the bar is fantastic if you like Gin! (my wife tried a couple.... now she is off hunting them down!)

I also liked the style of the interior, a few hunting items here, some old travel cases there, some great old pictures, and lovely old furniture. Just my kind of place - add some wintry weather, a dark ale, a perfect roast, job done!

“Superb”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2012

Went with the wife on a friday evening. Arrived, went into the bar for pre dinner drinks and clocked the awesome gin menu. As a lover of the gin I can say the visit is worth this alone. The food is excellent, the service was great, and the gin....

We will be going again!

We've stayed here several times at Christmas and during the summer with a group of friends and had a fantastic time. The food is excellent and service efficient and friendly. Would go back any time.
