“A bit of a let down”
Reviewed November 30, 2009

Having read the reviews we set off confident that we would have an enjoyable weekend in a comfortable well appointed hotel, unfortunately it was not as good as we had hoped. We arrived about 6pm in the dark in the muddy car park, the lighting although just about adequate did not make it immediately clear where the main entrance was. We arrived in reception to find no one on duty and eventually found some staff sitting about laughing and joking in the dining room and one of them came and booked us in. The receptionist was quite helpful and provisionally booked us a table in their restaurant as they had a free slot at 7. The room - No35 was well appointed and quite roomy the bed and pillows although not great were adequate. The room was quite dusty with quite a few cobwebs and overwintering ladybirds. The shower was good with plenty of hot water but the cracked walls and mould around the tiles were less appealing. The corridors and public areas were quite chilly but this seemed to appeal to the myriad spiders which adorned the corridor ceilings. We had a drink from the bar before we went to eat £7.50 for a pint of Magners cider and a J2O orange drink we felt was a little steep especially as we had to go looking for someone to serve us - eventually found some staff sitting about again laughing and joking in the dining room . We sat in the lounge which had a nice open fire (gas) and comfy sofas. It was a shame that a lot of dirty crockery had been left in there since before our arrival. The dining room is a high roofed room which was cold - the staff brought a portable radiator across to us when we said. There was no one else in the dining room which lacked any sort of atmosphere and we got the impression that we were imposing on the staff. We left and went to the Red Cow in the village which had been recommended to us by some other guests. We would also recommend it, great atmosphere good food and good beer and very friendly staff all at a very good price. Breakfast the following morning was again adequate but nothing special. The whole hotel has a slightly unloved feel to it, with attention given to lots of little fancy details while the main issues have been ignored or overlooked. It is a shame as it has the potential to be very good. Overall we enjoyed our trip but we will not be returning to Bignall Park any time soon nor would we recommend any of our friends to do so either. £95 value for money? Probably not.

We stayed for 1 night after a shopping trip at the (very) nearby Bicester Village. The reception area was a bit 'tired' looking, as was the lady who checked us in. We were allocated room 39, and I was scared to open the door and see what we had in store, but was pleasantly surprised when we saw the room was huge, and the bathroom looked newly refurbished. We had a conservatory/sitting area off our bedroom with some vile pale brown/beige net curtains at the windows and stained seagrass flooring (sorry I didn’t take some flip-flops/slippers with me!). Bedroom area was much better with a 4 poster bed and TV, safe, lamps etc. Upon closer inspection, the bathroom was good, but they hadn't quite given it the TLC it required. Cobwebs around the pipework, peeling paint where water had got onto shelves, and they only left 1 towel in the double room.
So, off to the bar to get a bottle of wine, which was hard to choose as it was something for either £15 or £30, nothing mid-priced. We started with a house one, and quickly moved on to the more expensive option after the inside of our mouths were removed. Dinner was excellent. I was astounded at how they can provide such a good meal at such a low price. Amuse Bouche before the starter, and both our starters, mains and desserts were very good. Service could have been better, but with 1 EMO, 1 waitress and a girl who seemed to be the receptionist, bar staff, cleaner, odd job person and manager all rolled into one, what more could we expect?! Ambience in the restaurant was much better than I had expected, and the fire made it nice and cosy on a wet night.
Unfortunately, didn't get to see the grounds as it was torrential rain the whole time we were there, but it did look very pretty from the window! In all, I'd warn people about the rooms, but for a short stay, you could do worse.

Spent three nights at this lovely hotel at an amazing specila offer of 3 nights BB at £150. for the two of us (Amazing Value) .We arrived on a sunny afternoon and sat in the lovely garden sipping white wine served by a very friendly member of staff. We had dinner in the restaurant which was beautifully served and cooked., again very moderately priced 19.95 for three courses, although there was also a three course meal available for only £15.00. The breakfast is freshly cooked for each guest. The bedroom was well appointed although the bathroom could have done with some paint ( a minor criticism, room 23)To summarize we would certainly go back to this hotel with its delightful staff.Only thing missing is a swimming pool.

Booked overnight stay on half price offer of £70 for 2 people inclusive of breakfast and have to say that our room was lovely. Took advatage of 3 course residents dinner offer which gave restaurant quality food at bar food prices and included a drink at £15 for 3 courses. Enjoyed a freshly cooked full english breakfast before departing and received the same excellent service that we had enjoyed the evening before.
