“Solid performance but lacking sparkle”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2012

Kingfisher Barn is a business with staff, as opposed to a family-run B&B. Everything was provided to a good standard but it lacked a little bit in character. Breakfast is brought to your room as there is no communal eating area; this may suit some people but it can feel a bit lonely, especially if you are there as part of a group. The central court yard is attractive and the location is a 10 minute walk into Abingdon which, in good weather, is very pleasant. I slept well in a quiet room, although the presence of a fridge in the room can make a bit of noise suddenly in the night! The site offers a mix of self-catering and B&B rooms which could suit some groups very well.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed fairly similar (I was part of a larger party so saw some of the others) but asking...

I found this accommodation through Booking.com and I have to say what a pleasant surprise, its in a beautiful & quiet location.
I am currently staying in a very nice B&B room, which is clean, comfortable with breakfast being delivered to my room, what a nice treat. I need to stay for business regularly over the next few weeks and although they are fully booked they have gone out of their way to accommodate me in self catering. As the weather is nice I am able to have my breakfast in the courtyard area so this makes a pleasant change to the start of my day.
The manager and staff have been very friendly, polite and chatty at all times, I can't fault the place or understand why anyone could complain about such a beautiful, peaceful country setting with excellent service.

we stayed for a weekend in one of the large lodges, it was spacious and clean, we were able to have a BBQ in the garden area, staff even helped with taxi's for our group to get to Oxford for a night out

Room Tip: would recommend Self Catering one of the large lodges

Wish i'd had a camera... to show some real photo's of this place !

No wonder they only feature shots of the lovely gardens and patio's !This is not one for the album.

We needed a stop over for 1 night only on a long journey... thankfully ! 1night was enough.
Looks like a lovely location, and we only had a room not a self catering cottage, but i agree totally with other reviewers ... 4 star this IS NOT ... after having the best stay ever in a 4* B&B for the previous 2 nights this was by comparison 'AWFUL' ... grimey, grubby and tatty. Ants!!! mostly dying (so obvious someone dealing with them) so ANT GRAVEYARD, dead beetles !!!
Animal hair on bed coverlet, disgraceful ! I know it's at RYE FARM, but really ?
The most uncomfortable saggy mattresses, 2 stacked on each bed ! what's the point, 2 rubbish mattresses offer no more support than 1!
Dirty crockery, dirty dusty kettle, dirty tray!!! dusty valances on the bed, filthy mirror ! Grubby bathroom. Dust in every corner and on almost every surface! Someone's shaved hair on bathroom floor, foisty nasty mat in shower base!
Smelly furniture... my daughter folded clothes and left them on a chair, they smelt foisty as a wet dog this morning when she put them on had no choice but to wear something from days ago, her wool coat smells nasty, it will have to be dry cleaned !

To top it all, after stating on arrival to the receptionist that we were looking forward to a good night sleep and lie in after 2 very full and busy days, and early starts + the fact that we needed it as we had a 300mile drive the following day we booked breakfast for 9a.m. to allow for a lie in... What did we know? So much for a lie in ... ROOM 10 !!!!! WARNING, You Do NOT Want to STAY in ROOM 10.

WE WERE 'RUDELY ' awakened at 6.30 this morning as the staff work just next to Room 10 ( and it's not their fault, they just do their job) they make all the breakfasts etc , next to room 10, they started work, and woke us at 6.30! They work just behind the very thin room wall behind the headboards of the beds in ROOM 10 !!
I knew at 8.55 that our breakfast was coming before they stepped out of the kitchen! and it's one thing being awake, it's another listening to them swearing and complaining ! VERY Unprofessional, just pleased my daughter's 18 and not 8!
To top it all, when i started on my 'Full English' i was horrified to find, some parts of my bacon 'RAW', my hash brown 'FROZEN still in part' raw mushroom (not lethal but not nice) and although i ate some of the other items i realised too late that was not a great idea as the raw meat had been on the plate ! when i told a staff member i was asked, 'so you want me to replace it? I declined as i wasn't confident it would be worth eating, and as the ingredients were all of such cheap quality it really wasn't something worth having ! I rang and informed the desk of the problem, I told them i wanted refunding for the breakfast, i was given a complaints form, i gave info on the food problem and made them aware of the cleanliness problems etc. I had hoped that this would be addressed when we checked out, i was wrong. Although i had not wanted to make a fuss and had asked in private for a refund firstly for the disgusting food served, it was refused... the attitude to the complaint was of disinterest and i was informed that no one was authorised to deal with the complaint, or authorise any refunding. No one in a management position was available to speak to, and no one would look at my complaint until Monday 18/6/12 as all management were on holiday. No interest was shown in the written complaints form and no apologies were given. I was clearly wasting my energy and breath and did not need to stress before a very long drive home so i left it that i'd be ringing them Monday. However, i'm also kicking myself i did not copy the complaints form and that i did not seek to use my daughters phone to take photo's ! it's not brillliant, but it would have been something. I know the state however, i experienced the food ! And i've signed the complaints form. I stand by the comments on the form and i await a response. A VERY Dissappointing Accommodation, shame that the 4* is very misleading, as another reviewer has stated 'to describe Kingfisher Barn as four star accom is a TRAVESTY . He's not wrong in our experience, there's not one item of comparison i can see makes this deserving of the same rating as the excellent 4star experience of our 2 nights prior to this... where is the protection for consumers... how and how often are these places checked. This is not worth of 2*.

Such a shame, as this was a great location, easy to find and close to the town, garden setting is lovely and tons of parking. What a shoddy place, the potential is there but every aspect other than location and setting lets this down... i'm not fussy for the sake of it, but we all like to think that even basic can be clean. And simple, even medium quality basic food isn't hard to get right. POOR QUALITY all round, avoid if you don't like dissappointment.

Room Tip: AVOID ROOM 10, otherwise you might as well go in and 'COOK' your own breakfast. If you hav...

we booked 2 rooms to attend a wedding in Abingdon and weren't disappointed. The rooms were clean and spacious, the bathroom was large and clean and the twin beds were comfy. It did take a little while to sort out which of the 3 wi-fi codes worked, but once we did it worked fine.
The breakfast had to be ordered the night before, but this wasn't a problem with a good choice. It's location was ideal 10 minutes from town but surrounded by fields - it was nice to see lambs, rabbits and best of all a red kite flying overhead (obviously looking for the rabbits!) We will go back

To describe Kingfisher Barn as four star accommodation is a travesty. The room was supposed to be a double, but it was tiny, as was the bed. The heating didn’t work and the walls were wafer thin so you could hear what was going on next door. The air vent in the bathroom sounded like a jet plane and stayed on 20 minutes after the light had been switched off. The water in the shower would suddenly go cold. The shower head slipped down uncontrollably. The soap was so tiny it was difficult to hold. One light above the mirror did not work. Eventually we got some heating, and it was then too hot as we were unable to open the windows for security reasons. The Wi-Fi didn’t work. The next morning the heating was again not working. The breakfast was cold and tasteless, especially the toast and marmalade, as only the cheapest ingredients were used. My advice: do not waste your money on this place.

Room Tip: Don't go to this place.
