“Christmas 2012”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

This is our 4th Christmas break that we have stayed at the Four Pillars Abingdon and one cannot fault it. Great value stay from arrival to departure we enjoyed our stay immensely. Rooms are spotless and warm and grateful thanks for the lovely Christmas presents and card, a lovely touch and as always much appreciated. Delicious food, cannot fault any of our Christmas meals, great chef onboard( the soups were divine) nor the delicious sandwiches and cakes and afternoon teas provided, the hotel provided entertainment too from a quiz, disco, vocalists and and a fun race game afternoon. The staff go out of there way to ensure everyone has a lovely stay, many thanks to Ben the manager the lovely friendly reception ladies, the cheerful and friendly bar staff, the gentleman and ladies who did the quiz and racing, you made our and everyones stay most enjoyable. We were pleased too to meet up again with guests we had met previously at the hotel. It's always a pleasure to stay at this lovely hotel as we always have such a lovely time.

We stayed here with a group of friends for a 3 night New Years Break. The previous 2 years we have been to the Witney Four Pillars and really enjoyed it but this year they changed from adults only, hence the change to Abingdon for us.

We all upgraded to a connoisseur room but didn't feel that it was worth the extra money. The rooms were very clean and the staff were very helpful. Breakfast on the first two mornings were very good although we had a long wait for both eggs and toast on all three mornings. On our last morning there wasn't any yogurt or grapefruit which was disappointing. The set dinners were very good and all the food was piping hot, but the choice of main courses were limited. On New years eve there was only a choice of guineas fowl or vegetarian. We noticed that one table had roast beef and we would have liked to have been given this option. On New years day, the choice was salmon, chicken or Thai veggie curry but yet again another table had meat pie. The portion of curry was so small my husband asked if he could have another one and this was quickly brought.

The New Years Eve Countdown was a fiasco. The DJ kept playing despite people telling him it was almost midnight, then suddenly he played Auld lang syne. The poor piper was just standing there waiting to pipe in the New Year which he did about 5 minutes into the new year and the DJ was still playing his music at the same time. What we missed was the lack of a party atmosphere. In all fairness I don't think that this was all the hotels fault. We sent some rocket balloons flying around the room which were totally ignored. Nobody wanted to join in. At Witney there was always streamers, blowers and rocket balloons on the tables but that was lacking at Abingdon.

New Years Day. the evening Duo were excellent but the guests were for the most part sitting at their table like zombies. It was how I imagine New Year in a Care Home to be. Our party are all 60+ and feel that life is too short to be miserable.

So all in all, we did have a good time but we will find another venue for New Year. It is not the hotels fault, it is just that the type of guest that goes there is not our type.

Room Tip: Don't bother upgrading

Dear Guest,

Thank you for leaving a review of our hotel following your stay with us over the New Year period. It is clear from your remarks that there were some elements of your stay that you were not entirely satisfied with for which I offer my sincerest apologies. I am always disappointed when guests prefer to leave anonymous comments on a website rather than speak to me, or another member of the management team, in person prior to checking out.

I am glad you enjoyed the food and I am sorry that you felt the choice was limited. As was stressed at the package welcome meeting we were happy to accommodate any request (within reason) that was made by guests staying with us over the New Year period. Our Head Chef spoke with a number of guests over the 4 days and was able to meet all requests fully; I know he would have been more than happy to do the same for you.

I understand there was a miscommunication between the DJ and the Piper at Midnight and this has been followed up with the parties involved, I am sure this did not detract from what seemed to be a very enjoyable evening for all guests. I am sorry you were disappointed by the lack of rocket balloons but following an incident at a non-Four Pillars hotel in the area our Group has held of offering these as a party favour.

I found the comments regarding your fellow guests to be inappropriate for a web site designed to review hotel facilities.

Finally, should you wish to discuss your review further please contact me directly via ben.sanders@four-pillars.co.uk

We are a family of four and stayed here for one night only and were not disappointed. it was very clean and bed was very comfy.Staff were very helpful and polite and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was excellent and we would definitely stay here again. i would say it needs a lick of paint and a bit of TLC but cleanliness and customer service to us ranks above the decor and we were not disappointed. thank you Four Pillars.

We went to a wedding and this hotel and the wedding and reception were very good and well organised, the food at the reception in particular.

The room was also comfortable - although the bathroom could do with an upgrade - and the breakfast the next morning was excellent.

We stayed here for £40 for the night as part of their Christmas dinner and dance package.
Staff were very attentive and well turned out, we had a standard room which was spotless and had a very comfortable bed with good pillows,

the only let down was the three course dinner because it was frozen vegetables and roast potatoes with a synthetic taste, dinner was followed by the usual disco which got everyone on the dance floor.

The breakfast was very good with a self service and everything that you would expect, we were very impressed with the bacon as there were really good cuts that were cooked to perfection, the breakfast staff were very stretched however they were doing a fantastic job, we would recommend staying here however we will only stay on a bed and breakfast basis next time.

overall very good value for money.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for leaving a review following your recent stay at the hotel. I was really pleased to read that you enjoyed the party night and breakfast the following morning.

I'm sorry that your vegetables and potatoes where not cooked to your liking. I would like to assure you, and any future guests reading this reply, that the only frozen food we serve is ice cream. All of our produce is freshly prepared on a daily basis, and where possible sourced from local suppliers.

Thank you again for leaving a review, and if I can be of any further assistance please don't hesitate to contact me.

Initial greeting from reception staff was excellent. In one of their 'upgraded' rooms, and was like a small town holiday inn in 1975 US. Shower in bath with rubber mat etc, plastic sheet crtain so water everywhere...
Ate out at that night at an Italian (Limonchello) in town, excellent!

Breakfast on 1st morning was a bit of a shambles, all hot food trays empty, so in the end after abut 10 minutes gave up waiting and just had toast.
There for a seminar, and room was okay. Carvery lunch was okay, but probably aimed at local pensioners rather than delegates.
Dinner in hotel 2nd night, food okay, but a bit like a 70's dinner party. Prawn cocktail, pâté etc, followed by beef pie, well, stew in a dish with a pastry hat. Dessert was a shop brought meringue nest with a couple of bits of sliced fruit.

Bar average, but despite a group of us there, shutters came down at 11:00 sharp, can't remember last hotel I stayed in that closed bar that early with residents there..

Overall okay, but needs to move on from late 70 's

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere? Upgraded rooms well below Hilton or even premier inn, and at 120 per night not cheap

Dear Guest,

Thank you for leaving a review following your recent visit with us. I am sorry that you were disappointed with some aspects of your stay.

I am sorry that you felt your room was "like a small town holiday inn in 1975 US". We have recently upgraded our connoisseur rooms with feature wall paper, iPod docking stations, flat screen LCD TVs and Clarins toiletries, plus further goodies and extras. Our baths are fitted with a non-slip base but as an extra precaution we do provide bath mats. By placing the shower curtain inside the bath you should avoid spilling water on the floor.

I am sorry that your breakfast experience was not at the standard you and alike would expect. We aim to keep the food in our buffet as fresh as possible and will top up little and often to ensure this is the case. On the occasions when a large number of people visit the buffet, it is inevitable that some items will run out. Whilst we do our best to keep on top of this it is sometimes unavoidable, however I do agree that waiting 10 minutes for items to be replaced is too long.

Our Hotel serves classic British and European dishes. These do include prawn cocktail and traditional pates. As you have correctly stated in your review, the Beef and Ale pie is served in a bowl topped with a puff pastry lid. We do not encase the entire pie with pastry as it allows the dish to be served gluten free when necessary. All of our food is prepared at the hotel and the meringues were certainly not shop bought; I am sorry if their presentation was disappointing.

I will follow up your comments regarding the bar closing at 11pm as the shutters should not be pulled down until 11.30pm at the earliest. Once the bar shutters are closed service is available from the Night Porters.

If I can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,
Ben Sanders

Paid extra for a Connoisseur room. It was nice enough but nothing special for £99 a night. Had dinner at hotel first night. Very unimpressed, does not look like a hotel restaurant. Been to smarter looking pub/ restaurants. Food was OK again nothing impressive.
