“A lovely hotel and amazing food”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

Stayed on a groupon one night with prosseco and breakfast. Booked in and shown to our room. This was lovely and clean with a huge bed. We had a walk into the town which is very run down but it was market day so that was great. No restaurants local to hotel but if you walked right through town there was an Indian and usual Yates type places. We ate at the hotel and are very pleased we did. The food was outstanding, service very good and very friendly staff. The food was very well priced and with large portions, all cooked to order. Bake well tart pudding was calling me all night so had to have that as well. All in all a lovely night away. Would definitely stay again.

Well another best western to review,,nice central location but Worksop seems a little worn around the edges, When I stayed the decorators where in so looks like the place is getting a lick of paint. Rooms warm and comfortable,,bar area nice and relaxing. Breakfast cooked to order and was good. On the minus side I think the price I paid was a bit much £80 for a single with breakfast !!!!!!

We had an ok stay but the experience was hit and miss.....
Plus points:
* I upgraded to an "executive" room which was quite big, great bathroom with walk-in shower cubicle but patches of carpet and sofa in the room looked a bit dubious
* Great location in the centre of town, walk straight out and you're at the shops, walk a bit further down and you'll quickly find some pubs and restaurants
* Deal was good (groupon) - £59 for 2 people for 2 nights with breakfast
* There is a small car park at the rear where you can park for free. If this is full, across the road from this is an NCP car park which is free after 6pm until 8am the next day. We used this on the first evening and then were able to move the car on the second day to the hotel car park
Negative points:
* Breakfast was awkward in terms of it being laid out in one room and then having to carry your plates / juice drinks through a narrow bit of corridor then down a couple of steps into the hotel bar / restaurant area. Tea and coffee was help yourself from a canteen type thing rather than being served a fresh pot at the table that you'd receive in most hotels. The tea and coffee was awful, like lukewarm dishwater. The breakfast itself was not great, had the usual bacon, sausage, egg but because we went for breakfast both days about 20 mins before it finished / closed there were no baked beans left either day and the limited croissants / pastries were very dry. Additionally, as soon as it hit the 10am closing time staff rushed around clearing up and taking things away which made us feel very rushed.
* Staff were initially fairly helpful (giving directions on where we could go out to have a drink) but at check-out this all changed. When making the booking I was asked if I wanted to upgrade the room for £20, I agreed to this (bigger room / bed, robes and slippers). On check-out I was told it was £20 per night, they therefore wanted £40. I refused as I had been told £20 and had no notification of anything to say otherwise. The supervisor who was checking us out visibly changed his whole demeanour; no apology, initially an insistence that it was an extra £40 and then a reluctant change to £20 when he discovered that they had failed to send out any notification / confirmation of the upgrade and how much this would be. Wasn't a nice end to the stay. Whilst checking in a gentleman in front of me was complaining about his room and the noise from the heating or such like, the same supervisor dealt with this and again was initially quite curt stating that there were no other rooms and again no apology. When the gentleman persisted with his complaint, suddenly the supervisor found another room...apparently a cancellation had mysteriously appeared during the discussion. the hotel could be much better with an improved breakfast experience and more understanding customer service staff.

We stayed just one night but could have stayed longer. The staff are brilliant, Lawrence Jones was very special and attentive. The food was simple but very good and not too expensive. Another brilliant thing about this Hotel was that it had Sky Sports channels on the TV, never had this before anywhere. The Hotel is in the heart of the town so it's good to get out and about. Will stay here again no problem. Thank you.

We stayed at The Lion for 3 nights. We had a good room which was very clean. We ate at the hotel on 2 nights and wished we had stayed in on the last night too. The staff were all very professional, polite and friendly.

I haven't stayed here but have just, for a second time, had lunch there. Well worth looking out for; friendly bar/waiting-on staff who can't do enough for you, clean, fresh, decent menu. Food is good-we had wraps with fries and salad for just over £5 each; very tasty, good portion sizes and good value. Coffee wasn't bad either. One 'bete-noir' of mine, however, is food served on a wooden platter. For reasons of hygiene I don't like it at all, so, for me, a small improvement can be made.

Parking is in public car-park behind hotel. At £1.50 for 4 hours this is a bargain. Hotel sits at the head of the main, and long , pedestrianised shopping street. We went on a Friday-market day- which means a nice after-lunch walk up and down this street browsing the stalls. Unexpected treat.
