“Wake in the morning to panoramic views of the Cheviots”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

Just returned from another wonderful time at Fenton Hill. This is such a special place - we have been coming here for years and can't wait to come again. All the cottages are wonderfully warm, comfortable and well equipped, and the welcome from Hugh and Margaret feels like we've truly come home. This time we stayed in Honeysuckle Cottage with friends - a lovely spacious house with a huge living room complete with log burning stove and incredible views. We arrived in the dark, and to wake in the morning to panoramic views from the bedroom windows of Cheviot in one direction and Goat Crag in the other is awesome. We have been here in almost every type of weather and it is always lovely. There are stunning views from all the cottages, and abundant wildlife - this morning we watched a fox saunter across the field whilst we were washing up! These must be some of the best cottages in Northumberland.

Room Tip: All the cottages are fantastic - go for Honeysuckle or Elderberry for the most space, and Crabapple...

We had a fantastic 4 night break during half term week (oct/nov 2012) in Elderberry Cottage. The cottage is lovely and very well equipped. The bedrooms are really clean and great for larger families. One double room and one family room with a double and two singles.

The children LOVED feeding Bumble- the donkey and Mabel and Petunia - the pigs!! We loved watching the birds on the feeder outside the window, particularly the woodpeckers.

The walk to the secret waterfall was brilliant for us. We were able to have a nice walk without taking the car out.

We stayed in Elderberry for a week and I have to say this was perfect for anyone wanting a relaxing stay. Although we were out and about everyday it was lovely to come back to the warmth and comfort of a lovely farm cottage, everything you wanted and more besides.
We loved feeding the birds each day and the greedy woodpeckers thought the fatballs and seeds were great. I really cannot fault anything about this holiday and we are already trying to decide on dates to come back and visit.

Once you visit I guarantee you will be back. My first stay was at the age of six and have been just about every year. This year I am booked to celebrate my 46th birthday at Fenton Hill. The setting is tranquility itself, tucked away in the heart of the Cheviots but loads of activities if thats what you are looking for. Holy Island, Alnwick Gardens and Castle and of course the fantastic beaches make perfect days out. Theres loads of realy good places to eat in the surrounding villages - the red lion at Milfield does a great carvery. The accommodation is perfect for couples, families or large parties. The log fires make it an all year round perfect break. Margaret and Hugh couldn't be more accommodating and the extras like the pet donkey, pigs and trampoline mean my six year old and her cousins forget about the telly and make memories I know they will have for ever.

Room Tip: Elderberry and Honeysuckle cottages have french doors straight out to stunning views of the Cheviots...

My partner, 3-year-old son and I second the earlier recent comments. We were so comfortable in the cottage and so taken with the setting and scenery that we hated to leave. We stayed in Elderberry -- very clean and well equipped. Our little boy was in and out the entire time; the whole farm felt safe and easy-going. We were also surprised by the many archaeological and historical sites within just a few miles, and Milfield has a nice little playpark.

I have been staying in cottages at Fenton Hill since I was 10 months old and I am now 35 and going with my own family. There is no where else I would rather go for a uk break. The cottages are in the most fantastic setting and have everything you could need. Margaret and Hugh are wonderful and nothing is too much trouble. I cannot recommend Fenton Hill highly enough. I am however a teeny bit loathed to do so as I don't want too many people discovering the most wonderful part of the world that has fantastic scenery but is also lovely and quiet. You should go and see for yourself.

Having stayed in one of the smaller cottages (Rosehip) in 2011 we were back with our two children, a friend and her family for a stay in the slightly larger version (Honeysuckle) in 2012. Beautifully appointed, clean and well-equipped cottages with everything that you need and more! Hugh & Margaret are extremely helpful and accommodating and we would heartily recommend this as a holiday destination whether you are travelling as a family or couple. The lawn area is really well set up for children with the pigs and donkey as an added bonus! The lounge was comfortable and warm with a beautiful wood burner to finish it off. We had very mixed weather but the area has enough attractions to cover the wetter days such as Bamburgh Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle, Edinburgh Zoo, Cragside & Lindisfarne. Hadrian's Wall is also well worth a visit - we visited the fort at Housesteads on the way home. (Joining the National Trust or English Heritage might be an idea before you go!). The beach at Cocklawburn is our favourite with great waves for bodyboarding. A fantastic destination, great holiday and beautiful cottages - is doesn't get much better, does it?
