We stayed here for one night to get away from our young children for the night. After a long walk in the beautiful College Valley, we were greeted by a roaring log fire in the sitting room and a fabulous home made two course dinner (chicken basque and homegrown rhubarb crumble). The house is gorgeous and rooms very generously sized. Some really nice touches such as real china cups and saucers and a 'proper' kettle in our room and a great selection of teas. Eildon, Martin and Di are incredibly welcoming and very knowledgeable about good walks in the area. Couldn't recommend this place enough. We will be bringing our young children back and booking the cottage next door.

Thank you for your lovely review. We would love to welcome you back and to meet your children. During summer when the days are warm and the river is low - this is a time when young children love to play down beside the stream. The river bed is full of well worn stones great for building dams and chasing small fish.
We also have all the wildlife nearby and if you are lucky you can take them to track and spot the feral goats.
We know that we can't offer the excitement of the City but for children this is, we think, closer to the world they might have known maybe 80 or so years ago.
Best wishes

Having tried Hethpool House for one night on a previous trip, we stayed for 3 nights in April 2013. We were extremely satisfied on all counts. Eildon makes her guests feel truly 'at home'; it's really like staying with an old friend.
The accommodation is excellent - well fitted rooms in an old and characterful house, good lounge etc facilities. And Eildon's cooking is very good indeed. One of us is veggie, one not - we were both looked after superbly. I have eaten much less well in restaurants charging far more than Eildon does!
We certainly intend to return, and would recommend this location without hesitation.

Room Tip: One room is ensuite - very modern power shower. The other has an 'exclusive' bathroom with a...

Thank you for your kind words. This area of Northumberland is seldom visited, indeed there is no sign anywhere for the College Valley. Even though the roads are small, narrow and usually surrounded by the tall hedgerows it is surprising how quickly you can be in Scotland and exploring the Tweed Valley. As long as you don't want to go south as that way is just wilderness!

I should also add that Edinburgh is within a days travel and sometimes our longer stay guests pop up there for a days shopping. Why they do this when there is so much beauty here always puzzles us :-)

Best wishes

We have walked passed Hethpool house for many years and didn't realize that we could have stayed there. What a shame -- for we have just had the most wonderfull 3 nights there. Three of us went walking on the snow covered hills in biting winds, sometimes sun, with views way up over to Scotland and the Eildon Hills. We came back each afternoon to hot showers, ( my shower, an original overhead one, that belched hot water and soothed away every ache) home made cake and tea by the log fire in our own sitting room. Silence except for bird sounds and the crackle of the fire. We chose not to watch TV or listen to the radio Five more friends/husbands joined us for one night to celebrate a birthday and a specially baked a wheat free birthday cake awaited us for afternoon tea. I had phoned Eildon the week previously to ask if it was possble for her to bake one. For the evening meal we had the tastiest three course meal ever. Two vegetarian, five meat and one wheat free. All the foods sourced locally or grown in Hethpool garden. Briliant. We drank wine that we were encouraged to bring with us. Our beds were so warm and comfortable, all white bedding and large fluffy towels. Breakfasts was another feast ! Martin and Eildon gave us all a holiday to remember and we thank them. We all hope to be back.

Room Tip: large twin over the front door, looking at the hills, with en suite OR first room at the top of the...

Thank you for your kind words. Over the years we have had many walkers to stay as guests and it has always been a pleasure to welcome them back with a warm fire, hot food and good conversation.
There are over 12,000 acres of wilderness across the College Valley along with feral goats, otters and deer. I do hope that you will all return.
Best wishes

We stayed for 5 nights at october half term and loved every minute. Lovely to stay in an old, homely
house. We stayed in the double room with private bathroom. The huge bed was really comfy with quality bedding and we loved the big old bath with lots of hot water and the most unique plug ever! No television or radio in our room and we had the best sleep for ages.
Eildon kept us going with amazing breakfasts with home made preserves and beautiful local produce. Martin and and their daughter helped to look after us too and we felt really spoilt. We had a lounge with an open fire and tea and home made cakes when we arrived and every day when we got back in. The evening supper was fantastic. Great location, with walks straight out the door. Their three dogs were so friendly and Teasel came for a walk with us the morning we left. We are looking forward to another visit next year sometime.

Room Tip: Be prepared to diet when you leave!!

Thank you for your kind words. We have had many guests comment on how comfortable the beds are. Sometimes I like to think that you can wake up in one of the upstairs bedrooms with the light flooding in across the Tors and maybe, for just a minute or two, you wouldn't know what century you were in. I know to many people this will sound silly but there really as timelessness about the Valley. In our own small way we are trying to keep this going and apart from our old computer there isn't a lot of the really modern world here.
Best wishes

We have just had a wonderful stay at Hethpool House. Eildon and Martin are very welcoming and attentive but without being intrusive. We arrived in the dark and could not believe how quiet and free from light pollution the area is - the evening happened to be clear and we could see the stars in astonishing detail. The house is charming, the bedroom was spacious and immaculately clean with lovely towels, good strong shower and lots of hot water. The dining/sitting room is very cosy with a roaring fire and TV. Eildon is a great cook and they grow their own produce or source things as locally as possible. The choice for breakfast was very wide and included things like fresh melon and fruit compote. We also opted to eat dinner there (Wooler is 8 miles on windy roads) on all three nights. The food was really delicious and even included scrumptious chocolates with the coffee! It was also exceptional value for money. You can wander round their extensive garden. Other walks which start directly from the house vary from a short stroll round the nearby lake to joining the St Cuthbert Way and then linking up with the Pennine Way. This house is a real find and we will certainly go back.

Thank you for your kind words. It was interesting to hear you mention the lack of light pollution. Evening times when the shadows draw in is a lovely time in the Valley. You can walk down the road towards the old stone circle and look across the College burn. Often the owl will sound and the light takes on a quiet purple hue which is quite unlike anything we have ever seen.
We think of this as the witching hour when the veil between now and then becomes very thin. Stand still and sometimes I can almost hear the voices from the past.
I do hope that you can return to share this magical place with us.
Best wishes

I stayed at Hethpool House in early September for five nights. I cannot fault my stay there. Eildon was there to greet me as I pulled up in my car. The food was fantastic, the beds were great, the baths were good old fashioned baths with loads of hot water and the service was faultless. I can't wait to go back.

Thank you John, that was a lovely review. All the things you found so enjoyable and good ...well these are the basics of the best hospitality and I like to think that we keep it simple. In reality this hasn't changed much over the last 30 years. Our guests come in better cars and they have mobile phones as well as these new Ipads....but the service we offer stays the same. Good homely food, a warm fire,a comfortable bed and a welcoming smile.
Looking forward to seeing you again

Hethpool House is ideally located on St Cuthbert's Way between Kirk Yetholm and Wooler in the stunning College Valley. Our stay was a slice of tranquillity as we were warmly welcomed into this beautiful Edwardian house where the past meets the present. Nothing was too much trouble for Eildon and Martin, from the home-made cakes and scones served on our arrival; the freedom to wander at leisure in the garden; to the superbly cooked evening meal which we shared in a relaxed setting with our fellow guests.

The charm of the location is the fact that the house is in the middle of the countryside with only one or two other smaller houses around. The property is both gracious and spacious with many still-functioning original fittings and stylish decor.

If you want peace and tranquillity, this is the place to stay.

Thank you for your kind words. We also feel the presence of the past all around the Valley. It brings with it the old idea of hospitality to strangers whoever they are. This is one of the many reasons that Martin and I so enjoy welcoming guests to our old house and if you can leave feeling a little better from being away from the modern world then our work is worthwhile.
Best wishes and do return soon
