“No duvet-yea!”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

We don't understand Europe's love affair with the duvet so we were pleasantly surprised to find this charming inn with a bed with a blanket and a top sheet! Even tho the rooms are of course very small, they also provided good reading lamps on the wall and even a mirror with an outlet under it! Of course there was the usual lack of a place to put a suitcase but otherwise it was great, and a decent price. Dinner here was also very good and we found an internet site up the street which is also often hard to find.

The most appropriate thing about the name of this establishment is 'Olde'. We stayed in the Upper Deck, not cheap at £130 or so a night. Great view but the room was very tired, decor in need of major work, windows worn out and would not stay open, bed a bit small and uncomfortable. The bathroom was the size you would find on a submarine. Not what I associate with AA ****. In comparison, the Trout Hotel in Cockermouth has just got its 4th AA star, charges about the same for B+B and is in another universe compared to the Ship Inn.

We found the food poor, their Steak Pie has to be one of the worst meals I've ever had. Breakfast was very average, most things were overcooked, the bacon was like cardboard. If the pub is a ship then the restaurant must be the brig. Small, cramped, virtually no natural light and the only windows in there look out into the car park.

The bar is a very interesting room and the beers are well kept, but the locals form a barrier around the bar making it hard to get served. They are NOT friendly locals either.

Have to say some of the staff were really nice, mostly the more mature female staff. Some of the young girls were hopeless.

Seahouses is nice but for what you pay to stay in the Ship there is no way we would go back there.

Did the 3 for 2 deal and was great value for money. Staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Room was spotless and the modern bathroom was fab - although every room is different. The chambermaid let us peek in on 2 empty rooms with 4 posters - stunning. We had Room 1 on the first floor over the entrance to the bar. All quiet by 11.30pm so not a problem. The mattress was on the firm side - which was OK for us - but the pillows were too. Will take my own next time as I like to bash it about a bit! Best traditional breakfast we have had, all served by a cheerful lady who had the service off to a tee - thank you! The bar was exceptionally busy but I guess thats normal at weekends - worth squeezing in though as the atmosphere and real ales are worth savouring. I recommend booking if you want to eat in the dining room in the evening on a weekend. Meal was OK but we had a better one at a similar price in Bamburgh, but then someone has to drive. Excellent base for touring Northumberland's coast, castles and heritage towns. This is quirky, lovely family run hotel full of character so if you want the sterility of a chain hotel it's not for you. We would definitely stay here again.

Fabulous bar, wonderful atmosphere, but stay somewhere else! You must visit the pub but the hotel, whilst spotlessly clean, is old fashioned, expensive, and the food disappointing. However a big thankyou goes to the staff who were wonderful!!

Room Tip: Try and find one without plastic/silk flowers

We stayed in the Upper Deck and the veiws were out of this world from our sitting room windows we had a veiw accross the harbour to the Farne Islands fron the front and from the side along the beach to Bamburgh Castle absolutly stunning!
A really good breakfast to set us up each morning and quality dinner in the dinning room every evening at a very competitive price a really good 4 night break.
Althogh I must say perhaps the carpets were all in need of a good clean

If you want dirty carpets, really filthy armchairs (which we covered with towels before we sat on them), a matted blanket on a lopsided bed, dusty artificial flower arrangements, out- dated decorations, terrible coffee and noise from the Beer Garden necessitating you keeping the windows shut all night, then come to The Olde Ship at Seahouses! And for this privilege it will cost you £118 for one night.
A great shame as this Hotel/Pub has a prime position in the village and the Harbour View rooms look out over the Farne Islands. However it may be the end of the season but why don't the owners look at the rooms now and again? Nobody wants to pay for someonelse's dirt accumulated over many months. Please get your carpets and upholstery cleaned! It does cost much or take long to dry!
You've also got a sign in the Harbour View room kitchens saying " own food must not be consumed". Why? We had no intention of cooking our own food but why supply a Kitchen then put this sign up?
This place has been in the same family for 100 years but apart from the Craster kippers for breakfast I'd go elsewhere!

Visited this friendly old fashioned pub every evening whilst on our 4 night respite break. Always a cheerful welcome and good atmosphere. Can't comment on the food as we didn't eat here. Wish The Olde Ship was our local!!
See you again
