not sure when something moves from having character and charm to becoming a bit tat. I think otterburn castle is still on the charm side, in my experience everywhere was clean but it is an old building with some interesting features - apart from the almost ankle deep red gravel in the parking area, park as near the entrance as you can particularly if any of your party are in heels.
As has been indicated in previous reviews staff are all very welcoming and smiling, food was good - although for the location i was a little disappointed there wasn't any game on the menu - so for the location a deserved 4/5

The Hotel needs updating. The team are very helpful and trying hard under difficult circumstances. I understand a lot of the positions are under potential redundancy. needs direction from the management. general tidy and really good clean. A little bit shabby and unkept. The food we had on our first night was truly excellent the second night was poor. The kitchen ran out of sausages for breakfast on the second morning. On balance we enjoyed the roaring fire and the friendliness of the staff. The Hotel is also pet friendly and our dog was made very welcome. Good luck for the future and kind regards

We stayed at this hotel through a discounted deal for dinner with wine, bed & breakfast for £89.00 per couple.
All the staff were very young Europeans and were extremely polite and pleasant at all times.
Value for money was good as the food was excellent and better than expected as the hotel is a little tatty and needs a bit of money spent on it.
Avoid room 2 on the ground floor as it located on a staff entrance & exit and is therefore very noisy with people moving about all the time. It also had the curious element of the towel rail almost 4 metres from the wash hand basin and bath/shower and therefore very difficult to reach.
Any stay at this hotel should be considered as reading or lounging time as there is nothing else to do in Otterburn.

Room Tip: Avoid room 2

We stayed here in February 2013 for an evening away. The hotel looks beautiful as you pull up the driveway and is lovely inside. The staff were all very welcoming. We had booked a four poster room for the night which on first entry was just what we were expecting. However the bathroom was a bit of a let down. I think they need an upgrade. There were also problems with the plumbing in that when we let the bath water out it came back up the bidet with lots of dirt in it! The bed was also rock hard - I'm normally one for quite a firm mattress but this one had me waking up all night and with back ache the next day.

We fancied something a bit more relaxed than the restaurant for dinner so walked around the outside of the building to the Stable Bar. From the name and the menu on the website I expected this to be a bistro pub but instead it is done quite modern and fashionable and is full of the young locals on a Friday night with music blaring out. The food was okay though.

Breakfast was excellent, good choice of almost local produce.

The hotel is how I would imagine an Edwardian Country House to be - but then I suppose that's what it is! The room was large with a huge four poster bed, the bathroom a little dated and in need of a bit of tidying up (I'd call it 'character') in terms of décor but immaculately clean. We arrived early in the afternoon and decided to have an afternoon tea and late dinner. The afternoon tea was excellent as was the dinner - lots of fresh, local produce. The TV was 'quaint' extremely limited channels and a small screen along way away from the bed! The staff were excellent throughout the stay and the breakfast was good, again lots of local produce served on a plate - a bit of a novelty these days, not a buffet or 'rubber egg' in sight.

Room Tip: The 'feature rooms' with four posters etc are worth the extra (in my opinion) for that speci...

Have stayed here twice before. The staff were great again and the breakfast very good. The evening meal was not as good as our previous visit. In fact the the starter of Twice Baked Cheese Soufflé should not have been served looked and tasted like a bad Yorkshire pudding .
However still great value and will book again

Recently stayed here just as a 'get away'. Driving up to the castle it is beautiful but small. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. Our room had a real castle feel, with a small, old wooden bed, a huge fireplace and large stone window frames. It was our understanding that the room had recently been decorated. The TV was an old CRT(?) TV with 3 channels randomly tuned in (one being number 90-something), the free wifi didn't appear to extend to our room so we were unable to even use our iPads as our television. The bathroom was large and quite nice but the towels were frayed and tatty looking, but fresh.

We had afternoon tea, which was a sandwich with side salad and coleslaw, a scone (with jam and cream separate) and slice of chocolate cake delivered all together on a dinner plate with a side plate and knife. Nothing to eat the chocolate cake, no napkins. We weren't sure whether we had to ask for a desert fork/spoon or what to do so made do with the tea spoon that came with our cup of tea. Compared to my past experiences for afternoon tea it was very bland and un-impressive. I don't mean the food - that was very nice. But the experience, the atmosphere and the presentation of the food left a little to be desired.

I think with some financial investment the Castle could be a beautiful place to stay and dine, however it left me feeling a little flat. The decor is in need of serious updating in all of the rooms, the TV's need updating, some of the furniture needs updating.

Having spoken to the GM I understand that this is on the cards in the future and I understand that you need to have money coming in in order to spend money on refurbishments, but I think without this investment people will be left feeling disappointed by their Experience.
