“Safe location for the kids to run feral”
Reviewed June 23, 2017 for a stay in June 2017

We stayed for Father's Day weekend and were extremely lucky with the weather! I found this lodge last minute and was really pleased with it. Beautiful location, safe environment for the kids to wander around on their own, and friendly goats and ponies to feed.

The lodge had everything we needed for a family of four - comfy sofas (ideal for train spotting), cooking facilities (including a barbecue and outside table), board games and a nice bathroom. The only slight drawback was the bunkbeds in the main living space (which meant silent reading for us after the kids were in bed), but who minds that on holiday?

Ideal base for exploring Northumberland, Alnwick Castle is an easy hop away and some stunning beaches within easy reach.

“Amazing. Animal heaven. We can't wait to go back!”

I went with my boyfriend and his two girls aged six and ten who love animals and we couldn't have been happier.
It was a surprise so when we pulled up and saw the horses and goats, they were thrilled.
Inside the Owl Sanctuary, we were blown away. It's very Hygge, nicely decorated, with owls everywhere which we all loved.
Oh, and a decent shower too - a bonus after a day on the beach.
For the grown ups, there was a mini bottle of wine and Haribos for the kids. And chopped up apples for the horses!
Sorry Allan, but we gave them our own carrots and apples too - hope that's ok!
We had an amazing time. As well as the animals, there is a playpark for smaller children, and little cars to play around in.
It was dog friendly too, which was great as we have a small dog.
We had our own BBQ as well which we were able to use in one of the hottest weekends of the year.
Location wise, it's near the beach at Alnmouth which is stunning, and there's a small pub and co-op for all you need in the next village.
It really is such a fantastic place and we can't wait to go back.

“Very disappointing not at all what I expected”
Reviewed May 14, 2017 for a stay in May 2017

Place very basic, freezing cold even with heating on!
Bed terrible mats unsafe. Dirty cobwebs everywhere saw rats out of bedroom window.
Horse poo in enclosure next to accommodation never cleared up the whole of our stay!
No greeting from owners, never saw them!
Place not insulated, huge gap at front door!
Would benefit a handyman, as place unloved!

Hello Marilyn
It is very disappointing when a guest leaves a poor review especially when they do not give the owners the opportunity to rectify any problems during their stay by not bringing it to our attention.

Re the heating - we are surprised that you felt cold in May when there is central heating and a fire in the sitting room - we would not have hesitated to give you more heaters if you had contacted us. (But guests who stayed in March & April were warm and comfortable there)

Horse manure( small amount) in the field adjacent to the Owls Nest is
actually perfectly normal as you were staying on an animal sanctuary/farm and in fact our guests all say how they love the horses & goats so close to where they are.

The fact the cabin is not insulated is in fact stated in the agency details before you book.

Your comment that you never saw the owners also comes as a surprise as in fact your original message to us on booking was that you were glad that you "did not need to bother us" on arrival - which is often an indication that guest do not want to be disturbed by us.But in fact we did meet. ( see below)

However, what we really think is the reason for you posting such a poor review is that you brought a dog with you without notifying us and then I had to inform you not to walk the dog in a private area with free range poultry - which you took offence too. And also you left without paying the £25 fee for the dog. So I think perchance your poor review is in fact due to this and not dissatisfaction with the Owls Nest at all. As owners who work extremely hard to to provide a good experience for our visitors, I find spiteful reviews quite offensive.
Regards
Alan

“Peaceful, laidback animal friendly chalet close but not to close to everywheere”
Reviewed April 25, 2017 for a stay in April 2017

We stayed here for a couple of nights late in April, my wife granddaughter and me I found the accommodation a little basic. But that said the beds are comfortable the kitchen area had all you need, lots of hot water passable Wi-Fi and TV and a little welcome package. All the animals, horses, ponies, goats and chickens where quiet gentle when being feed and came straight over as soon as you appear. A little off the beaten track but quiet close to Newcastle one way and Holy Island the other. Overall we enjoyed our stay and will return for more of this peace

“Lovely Cosy New Year”
Reviewed January 3, 2017 for a stay in December 2016

Arrived to some lovely welcoming touches, home made cup cakes, ginger snaps for the goats and a little bottle of wine for mam! We were worried that we would be cold, with going end December, but definately not the case, very windy and wet on a night, but not an issue at all. My 5 year old daughter loved feeding the Goats, Horse & Shetland Ponies. Very good location to use as a base, Newcastle and Northumberland on door step. Would definately go back.
