We recently stayed at The Shoulder of Mutton when my son was playing in a golf tournament nearby. I have to say I was completely taken aback by the hospitality we enjoyed. The food was excellent - I would recommend the steak deal - book early as the restaurant can be very busy.
The rooms were nothing fancy but very clean and the beds were comfortable which suited our needs.
We will certainly stay again or if passing we would certainly pop in to say hello!

We discovered the Shoulder of Mutton when visiting friends in Todburn 12/08/13. We popped in for a drink on saturday night, and had an excellent meal, went back for sunday lunch, then booked to stay over on monday night. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and their customers treat newcomers like mates straight away. The breakfast was super,as were all the meals we ate there. The room we had was very nice and spotlessly clean, and we would go back any time we are back in the area John and Ann Sheffield.

The sad, neglected exterior of the building prepares you for an equally dilapidated interior. The whole place is desperately in need of TLC
The approach to the rooms was via the back of the kitchen where an overpowering smell of oil greeted you. The rooms themselves were adequate and clean but the towels and sheets were the cheapest you could buy and there was a huge whole in the divan which could have been covered by a valance sheet.
The evening meal and breakfast were edible and sustaining but the dark brown décor was quite depressing.
The staff were delightful in the absence of their employers who are extremely fortunate to have them as they are the only selling point.

Probably the worst place I've stayed. Desperately in need of a refurb with depressing decor. You access the bedrooms via public smoking area and continue to a separate entrance with uncarpeted stairs which are badly in need of redecoration. The bedroom (single) was clean but exceptionally small. If you're staying in the twin bedroom you'll be able to join in the conversation that you can hear from the bar downstairs! At £80 per night for the double (the only one with en suite) the prices are extortionate. What a pity for the staff - for the service they provide they deserve a 4* establishment.

We stayed here (3 adults in a family room) overnight on our way up to Scotland - staff were friendly and welcoming, the room was comfortable and clean, the food in the hotel was lovely and great value, and the real ales were well kept - all you need when passing through a town! We opted for the full english for breakfast and it was exceptional - the meat is top quality and (I understand) locally sourced.

My wife and I enjoyed a good Sunday carvery lunch here at a very respectable price. Just as well that we booked a table in advance as the restaurant area of the pub filled up very quickly.
Restaurant staff were very pleasant and they seemed to cope well with a number of family parties dining. The outside of the building could do with a little TLC as the entrance from the car park looks somewhat run down. That being said, it won't stop us from making a return visit sometime in the future.
