Description: The Meadow House is an unusual pub by today's standards. No chrome, tv's, leather, little lights in the floor or pictures that look like someone threw the paint at the canvas blindfolded! To sum it up, we are a family run, unpretentious rural country pub, that aims to provide great quality home cooked food and service at a fair price; that's it!Since the early days of the A1 highway we have regularly been known as 'The First and Last Pub in England' as the Scottish Border is only a mile away. Our main emphasis is our food. Over the last 30 years we have built up a great reputation for serving only the finest quality fresh local produce from all around the borders, and lots of it!We are lucky to have great team of staff that are as interested in the business as we are. Our enthusiastic head chef Adam Bettison is relentless in his quest for ever improving our food. With help from David Hearn, the owner and chef, who was trained at Michelin starred Winteringham Fields the service is well above average for a country pub. We are locally renowned for are homemade desserts made by Edith Hearn, the proprietor and chef. For 30 years her homemade ice creams, meringues and more have tantalized the taste buds of people all over the world! The restaurant & bar are stuck in the past, with their unique decor that is farming and game orientated, and some could argue the menu; with classics like prawn cocktail, whitebait, steak and kidney pie and fish and chips is also very traditional, but why should we change? After all its food like this that help build this country! We are wheelchair friendly being on one level, and due to be being able to seat 100 we can cater for large parties including weddings & funerals. Our large car park means parking is not a problem. We are very family orientated and we can adapt for any dietary needs, allergies or dislikes, just let us know!We look forward to seeing you,David, Edith & all the Team.

“Another enjoyable meal”
Reviewed November 14, 2012 via mobile

We just decided to pop up for our lunch and with it being a lunch we were seated straight away . I have never had a problem with the service and again didn't, was served our drinks straight away. I had the steak baguette with fried onions and it came with chips and a small salad and my son had chicken nuggets and chip and he asked the lady for a large portion and that he got, I had the fudge cake and cream it was amazing. Very good value for money and we will be returning, as its one of our favourite places to eat .

“The Place to Eat”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

We used this restaurant when staying locally on recommendations from family. It more than lived up to our expectations. The menu was comprehensive and reasonably priced, the food was delivered within a good time, hot and delicious.
The service was very attentive and all the staff cheerful, helpful and very friendly. The atmosphere was quiet but we do have a preference for eating early evening so no great surprise there. We do visit the area several times a year and now we have 'found' the Meadow House we will certainly eat here again.

“Staff Lunch including Vegan”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

We have had a few staff lunches at The Meadow House and generally have been very pleased. Like others we have found the staff to be warm and friendly and the food to be of good quality, with good portions. However, the starters seem to be a bit overpriced for the size of the portion [but that seems to be the norm everywhere these days]. What we found to be most impressive was how much the staff knew about special dietary requirements. Dave, the Manager, was very accommodating as we had a vegan in the party and we gave him prior notice. The Manager went out of his way to telephone me to ask what I liked and didn't like. He then sourced the ingredients so that there was no fuss when it was time to order the food. Very often a vegan can be made to feel as if they're being "awkward", "strange" or just plain fussy - not so in this case! When the waitress came to take the order she knew immediately that there was a vegan and told me that the chef was ready to "veganise" anything, if this was possible. I love Garlic Bread, but very often can't have it because of the butter content. No problem for the chef at Meadow House - the garlic bread was delicious, rubbed with olive oil and garlic. The main course was a tasty nut roast dinner. The pudding was meant to be vegan ice-cream and fruit, however, they had bought diabetic ice-cream, instead of soy ice cream. Although I wasn't able to have this, it didn't matter as it was the thought and effort that counted. I'm sure the next time [because there will be a next time], the correct ice cream will be available. There are not many places in Berwick-upon-Tweed that you can get such a positive attitude towards special diets. Although, I would recommend that if you are vegan, phone ahead just to make sure that a menu is in place for you.

“Family meal”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

We were staying at the Travelodge across the roundabout and, for a change, decided to walk to a restaurant ! A coach load of pensioners had just arrived and so the servers were very busy. We had our dog with us and so were seated in the Bar area.
Main thing was that the staff were very friendly throughout and food was good quality and plentiful. We had the Salmon with Horseradish & Cucumber sauce for main course, one child had Burger and the other the Curry. Desserts were impressive, particularly the cheeseboard with Port !
Some slight service delays just because of the number of coach customers in the restaurant but nothing excessive.
Only complaint I have is that after walking to the restaurant there were no hand-pulled beers available !
Overall very pleasant visit and the place is already reccommended to family and friends.
