Marshall Meadows Country House Hotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 19, 2013

Firstly, this hotel and the package was under priced and I have paid a lot more for much less.
A fine Georgian mansion house that has been well maintained and the public areas are excellent with open fires. The restaurant and bar were full of character and enjoyable to be in.
The food was fresh and different and the hotel uses a lot of local farms for their produce. The food and wine choice was excellent with local fish produce a good choice.
Hotel room was clean and practical with everything you need including a bit of character. Large room with view of the north sea in the distance.
So why 5 stars, Many hotels can give you the above however the owners have managed to make you feel special and with every member of staff we met continuing with this theme it makes for a happy break. The break I took was a last minute decision and from my initial enquiry to my leaving the hotel I was treated extremely well and will be back sometime in the future.
For dog owners especially: Excellent hotel with great walks and all hotel staff are a joy to deal with. Thanks for a great couple of days

Mid week dinner deal break, had a wonderful time very relaxing and excellent staff, good food and very accommodating just the thing to recharge your batteries. Well sited for walking along the coast when the weather allows, perfect for nipping into see Edinburgh and the boarders and Holy Island. Value for money and will only get better as the new owners up grade the hotel. We will stay there again but this time during the summer months

We may have been spoilt by the hotels we had stayed in before this and admittedly they were 4 star, but we had high hopes for this hotel after visiting the website. Unfortunately the stay was very dissapointing. We had booked the suite and although it did have 3 rooms that's where any similarity to a suite ended. The decor is old and tired, and although clean, cream sheets just don't look it. The TV was a relic from the 80's and once in bed you couldnt see it, as it was on a tiny table. Overall the whole room was poor and definately not 3 star. We were so underwhelmed we decided to eat out, but after finding a few suitable places that were all booked we settled for a McD's. That turned out to be the best bit of this stay. Breakfast took 30 minutes to arrive, and there was no sign of any toast. There was confusion over payment on leaving - They were right as it tutned out, but it just made the whole experience a bad one. The place was busy, so it may just be us - but if I was up this way again I would drive the extra distance and stay in Edinburgh.

We hate to disappoint our guests. I take onboard Stuart's comments and respect them. I think that the problem is that the rooms he stayed in are actually intended to be and indeed are called a 'Family Suite' and are more usually used by families rather than a couple. We have not had negative comments about them before. The term 'Suite' does perhaps create too high an expectation and we will change that straight away. will also put in an order for a new TV and will make sure it is visible when lying in bed. Breakfast should not take 30 minutes to arrive and toast is of course included in our breakfast. Apologies, being busy is no excuse. Its a shame that the reviewer decided not to try one of the main attractions of the hotel which is a pre dinner drink in the bar by a real log fire followed by dinner in our restaurant. I can't guarantee the outcome but I'm sure he would have a more complete picture of what we can offer. Certainly the lady's review beneath this one based on a stay on the same night would make me hope so.

We had a wonderful weekend break on the Borders, made even better by the hospitality and friendliness of owner, David.

Our room was light, clean, spacious and had a nice view facing out onto the main lawn; it also had a good sized en suite and a small seating area by he main window. Contrary to some feedback here, I can confirm that you cannot hear the A1 from the hotel - we are in our mid twenties and consider ourselves to have reasonably good hearing! The hotel is sat back very well from the main road.

The coastal path is less than 5 minutes from the hotel which stretches towards the Scottish border and beyond, you can also head south towards Berwick itself. The hotel is well situated to explore the area and David recommended a short drive across the border to St Abbs and the National Trust land close to it - I highly recommend walking here - beautiful coastline and views and St Abbs fishing harbour is a great little place off the road - thank you for suggesting this David!

We both had the sirloin steak in the restaurant in the evening which was very good and the wine list was well considered with a suitable range. Breakfast the following morning got us off to a good start to the day before exploring.

This is a great place to stay to explore the coast and surrounding area - shame about Berwick town centre itself though, the place was dead on a Saturday afternoon!

Stayed here for dinner, bed and breakfast. Long drive way in which meant you were away from the noise of the main road. Chilled wine in bucket on arrival with homemade shortbread in the room. After walk along the coast we were treated to a beautiful three course meal. The hosts and waiters were very attentive without being obtrusive. Grand big log fire in the bar was a treat. The rooms were nothing fancy but homely, very clean. Breakfast was outstanding. All produce being sourced locally. Would recommend this hotel to anyone needing a quite, friendly night away. Would definately return.

We have just returned from a splendid stay here, the owners and staff are really lovely and friendly, they went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The hotel, originally a Georgian mansion still retains many of the original features, you get a real sense of the past in the downstairs lounge and bar. There are great ( windy and bracing) cliff top walks that can be accessed directly from the hotel, from which you can return to a warm delicious dinner, the food is beautifully prepared and delightful. Later in the evening there was a great convivial atmosphere among the guests as we all sat and chatted in front of a roaring fire in the bar. We can't wait to return again soon.
