“Very enjoyable stay”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

We visited this establshment two years ago and found everything to be 100% so we arrived with the same expectation this time and we were not dissapointed. The room was prepared for us and while we were checking in downstairs, the owner lit the fire for us in our room (room 5) which was huge with a seating area as well as a double bed. When we asked about the 2hr limit at the nearest public car park we were told to bring our car around the back and park in the hotel carpark itself. (I believe there are only 2 spaces so dont hold your hopes out for this if you visit)

The room was spottless (possibly a little cluttered but this was mainly due to the christmas decorations that had been put up) but byy far the best selling point of this establishment is that your dog is made welcome both in the room and the restaurant. Our meal was wonderful and our breakfast the following day was great as well.

We did meet the owners dog (a rather large Irish Water Spaniel) as we were coming downstairs for breakfast and if I am being honest he wasnt overly impressed to see our dog Murphy and did bark at him. Having said that, his tail was wagging all the time and I didnt for a second believe that a fight was about to break out.

If we visit Berwick Upon Tweed again - and I am sure we will - then 1Sallyport is where we will be both staying and eating.

Spent two nights here to celebrate a 'special' birthday and used it as a base to explore the Northumberland coast. There was a lovely welcome and the room was beautiful. We arrived to find our room had a real fire lit with fresh flowers. The staff were friendly and the food was very good. Would definitely go back.

We drove into Berwick without reservations at 7:00PM on a Wednesday night and parked down near the old Hens and Chickens Hotel by the river. We scouted out a few places; our wives stumbled on 1 Sallyport and decided that's where we were going to stay. It was charming enough, although the man at the desk was not too knowledgeable about parking or pretty much anything else we asked about. But he was polite. We were unaware of the experiences many had shared about encounters with the owner. We booked a table for dinner, which was generally pretty good. The service seemed fine as well. We all remarked on the pastries left out drying on the counter top and figured that this was simply a UK preference. The night passed quietly, the room was very nice. It was large, had a sitting area and was furnished nicely. The bathroom was modern and the hot water was abundant. In the morning we enjoyed breakfast of waffles and juice, noticed the woman who was presumably the owner meeting with her staff, and paid our bill and left. I don't think we would have been equal to the excitement experienced by a few others mentioned here and consider that we were quite fortunate to have slipped in and out without drama.

Room Tip: Perhaps just show up quietly and leave early. The room with the fireplace isn't worth the extra...

We stayed here for a family get together so had a few rooms booked. They were all decorated nicely, but maybe a little over done making the room feel a little cluttered.
My husband and I stayed in an attic room ( name escapes me) as we we the shortest pair and there was not always vast amounts of head height. The bed was very comfy, the bathroom was satisfactory, but disappointing after seeing the lovely bathrooms in some of the other rooms.....the shower head as particularly dodgy . Also access to our room took us via some of the staff areas, maybe the laundry room? Which felt a bit untidy.
On the other hand, the staff were very accommodating of small children during the stay and during an evening mel we had there. Food was good.
We did find it a bit odd that everything had to be paid cash, rooms or food, and there was some confusion over room prices as we didn't end up staying in the rooms we had reserved due to a long term resident being there and one of the rooms we finally stayed in the Internet said was cheaper but the manager said this was not the case. It was all a wee bit bizarre.
My in laws room had a lovely sitting area which was great for a party our size.
Would I stay here again...im not sure.

The staff here were friendly and helpful and the quality of the food was first class. The room was clean and comfortable and has been decorated with quality items. We thought it strange that the owner did not greet us at any point during our 3 days although she was clearly there. Someone suggested that we did not to try to get close to her lovely looking dog which was wandering around, as we were told that apparently it had bitten people in the past.. it only barked at us fortunately! We didn't mind particularly being asked to pay for the room in cash in advance, but it is not usual and is likely to put some people off.

Well...where to start. Our experiance at the 1 sallyport hotel was a total waste of money and time. The owner was effectivly the devil in carnate. We where visting a dear family friend and decided to give this a go, on the outside it could of been the Ritz, however as we soon found out it was actually hell itself disguised as an upmarket 'Botique' Hotel. We arrived at the 'Hotel' early sunday morning to find out we could not check in until three in the afternoon! on top of that we were not even allowed to leave our cases. Which were three extremly heavy bags. We were eventually taken to our room which don't get me wrong was pleasent enough, the staff do an extremly good job, aside from the owner who repeatedly snapped at us and made us feel very unwelcome. On to the meal. Well. Although the quality of our meals were top standard. We had both deicded to order the fish. When mine eventually arrived everything seemed to be lovely. But when my husband's meal arrived his had a very funny smell that didn't seem to be right. We asked the waitress to take his back into the kitchen. She replied "we will make you another meal, sir", all my husband done was touch her on her arm and replied "it's alright, I'll order something else". The next thing we knew the crazy woman came flying over to our table, trying to accuse my husband of abusing her staff, and dialed for the police. When the police had arrived they told us that the woman had problems, and asked us kindly to leave. Which for us was no problem at all ! We had to argue for our refund on the evening's stay as we deicded to leave and stay with out relatives instead. Which was a much more enjoyful experience.
So... overall whatever you do please, please, please don't stay at 1 Sallyport.

We stayed in Low Bells, beautifully decorated room with great attention to detail and a very comfy bed and powerful shower. Restaurant was equally well decorated with exceptionally good food both in the evening and breakfast with staff being very friendly during both services. The welcome at arrival could have been more friendly and no available parking and only cash being taken (no cards) frustrated a little, but would definitely visit again. If on the menu the lobster is a must have!
