“Historic Border town”

Berwick Upon Tweed Castle & Ramparts
Reviewed May 1, 2013

Heritage, great buildings, barracks, and market days! The history of this town is tumultuous, and it is worthy of a lengthy visit, and a walk around the old town wall.

The remains of the castle lie along a beautiful walking trail that allows stunning views of the Royal Border Bridge and the river. I loved the historical plaques scattered around that described battles, ceremonies, etc and gave some insight into the history of the town.

After reading about Berwick on the internet I was looking forward to visiting on a Wednesday for the town market - in total there were 3 market stalls all the pubs execpt one were closed. We did try to walk the town walls but half way round we seem to have taken the wrong path and finished up back in town when we came to the fork in the path there was no direction as to which way to go. very dissapointed.

We followed the signs to the shopping centre and ended up in entirely the wrong direction! As we were near the castle we decided to visit and walk along the river a bit. I was really disappointed about the little remains that are left of the castle, there being very little to see and no real good vantage point. The bridge imposing on any photos.
