“THE place to stay”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

Why is the Anchorage Guest House in Berwick-upon-Tweed THE place to stay?

Because of the warm welcome and friendly atmosphere; the beautifully restored, stunning interiors of the 18th century townhouse; the tasteful décor and quality of the rooms; the central, but quiet location; the beautifully cooked breakfasts; the three minute walk to the ramparts; the wealth of local knowledge from its owners, both born and bred in Berwick...

As a solo traveller, the single room I occupied was spacious, beautifully presented, and light. I would unreservedly recommend the Anchorage Guest House.

Stayed with Sandra and Ian for 4 nights and was spoilt rotten. Am sure I put on weight from Ian's breakfasts! My room was really clean, nice and airy. Fabulous people, fabulous house. The house is in a very central position and about 10 - 15 minute walk from the rail station. Both Sandra and Ian can advise on things to do and are very knowledgable about the local history.

Spotlessly clean, very comfortable, Ian's fantastic breakfasts, and added to this, both Ian & Sandra's pleasant manner and their extensive local knowledge all combined to make this a great holiday. My first trip to Berwick and I will certainly be returning, hopefully staying at the beautifully renovated, centrally located The Anchorage.

We stayed here on the last night of our holiday in Scotland. We had been travelling in a camper van for a week and this was our last night treat and Mr N's birthday and treat it certainly was! We
couldn't fault anything, the room, hosts and breakfast were all 1st class. The building itself is sensational, which had been lovely restored by Ian (proprietor) himself as it had been in the family for generations The staircase is magnificent and jaw dropping. Sandra and Ian class themselves as 'Berkwickers' as the family have been established for decades in the town as purveyors of meat & poultery 'Dods' the butchers and to that end should you require any local knowledge the couple are the best people to speak to. I strongly reccomend this charming place to anyone looking for a little luxury even if only for 1 night. We will certainly be back if in the area.

Stayed here during a weekend in Berwick and was everything we hoped for. The owners are very friendly, genuine and accommodating, the location is perfect and the rooms and service were faultless. Sandra and Ian were able to help with everything we needed and are very knowledgeable about the area, and made us feel welcome and at home. The house itself is beautiful and very interesting, and their two dogs are adorable (if you're not a dog lover then they are kept in a separate part of the house, but if you want to meet them then you'll instantly fall in love with the two of them). Will definitely stay again if looking for a weekend away.

Myself and a friend stayed here for one night during a bike ride from Newcastle to Edinburgh. We had read the good reviews and the place looked ideal. Indeed it was. This is a very impressive guest house, a fantastic place to stay in Berwick. It's central, very near good pubs and restaurants and the place itself is a little (or actually quite substantial) gem. The room we stayed in on the top floor was very comfortable with a lovely on-suite bathroom, all nice and spacious. Breakfast was wonderful as was our whole experience, albeit only for one night. Thoroughly recommended.
