Diana and Michael Austin - 20th October 2008

What wonderful breakfasts! a delight to recall. The room and the welcome was of the highest quality and comfort and the location was perfect for touring the local sights including The Holy Isle Bamburgh Castle Seahouses and the Farne Islands.

We will most certainly be returning and would strongly recommend it to anyone touring the area.

We have recommended it to both family and friends in particular our golfing relatives as the owners run packages for golfers which I am assured by my golfing family is very reasonable in cost.

Booked through a tourist brochure to stay here for four nights at the end of September 2008 with my partner.
Being just a mile or so off the A1 it is very convenient and central for all the tourist attractions in the county.
John and Jill here couldn't have been more warm, sincere and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble in their charming home where we paid £75 per night for the room ( other rooms were more expensive ) but we were more than satisfied in The Yellow room at the rear of the house overlooking the courtyard, garden and sheep meadow beyond. Although we have no pets ourselves dogs can be accommodated without any trouble and other guests were discreet about their own animals.
Every nuance could be catered for from a different pillow to a different dressing gown and so on. The whole experience could not have been nicer.
Breakfasts were to suit any and every taste, being extensive and lavish in their choice providing anything from the simplest fare to wonderful succulent kippers, terrific eggs benedict and the fabulous " singin` hinnie. " I particularly enjoyed the flower honey on the comb. All produce is as local as can be and cooked to perfection by Jill in particular.
One evening we decided to stay in and watch TV just. Jill provided a most wonderful cheese platter which included a wide variety of cheeses, strawberries, grapes, celerysticks and olives with oatcakes and other savoury biscuits. Followed by a good choice of ice-cream the cost was £11 for the two of us. Perfection!
Having received various high-class awards for their guest house all are certainly well deserved. We couldn't have been looked after any better in any hotel anywhere no matter how much the tariff may be.
This place would suit everyone, I'm sure, and I urge anyone wanting to stay in Northumberland to go to Market Cross Guest House without delay!

Proprietors Jill and John Hodge were recently runners up in the AA's national and prestigious Friendliest Landlady competition in London. We cannot believe which saint managed to beat them into second place!

As soon as we arrived we were warmly welcomed and made to feel entirely at ease in our new surroundings. Nothing was too much trouble and they managed to achieve exactly the right balance in their hospitality without any sense that they were ever overbearing or intrusive.

The room was large, comfortable, clean and tastefully appointed. Ideal for a gentle relax after a hard days holidaying in the (sometimes wild) beauty of Northumbria.

The breakfasts were a delight with a large range of local products and dishes on offer.

The complementary sherry and whisky was heartwarming in every sense.

Jill definitely deserves the Friendliest Landlady title. I have never felt more at home in a guesthouse. The rooms were excellent, spotlessly clean, very comfy, and the breakfast provided was more than enough to keep us going on our walks through the days. We will definitely be going back again as this is a perfect base for exploring the whole county. Karen

We had an excellent 2 days at Market Cross. The rooms are super. The breakfasts are something else, fantastic choice all local produce, we didn't have to eat all day. Jill gave some great advice on a visit to holy island, local beaches, castles and some good info on local resturants.

We stayed at Market Cross for a few days this summer for a long-overdue get together with friends. Belford was a great base to explore Northumberland, as everywhere was within about 30 mins drive. We had a lovely walk along Bamburgh beach, fish and chips in Seahouses, and visited the gardens at Alnwick. Jill also recommended places to visit, like some of the local farm shops and quiter beaches.

The guesthouse was very well presented - good sized rooms and beautifully decorated. Jill and John were wonderful hosts - we visited a short time after they'd come second in the 'Friendliest Landlady of the Year' competition, and by our experience they should have come first! One day we got back early and wanted to share a bottle of wine, so Jill invited us to enjoy it in the sunshine of the back garden. She also made us up a very tasty cheeseboard with some delicious local cheeses to keep us going until dinnertime.

A wide choice of hearty (and some healthy) breakfasts set us up for the the day. My favourite was the Omlette Arnold Bennet - fluffy eggs with smoked haddock, cream and parmasan cheese - yum! I also tried a Singin' Hinnie, which my grandma used to make and I hadn't had since I was a girl.

In all it was a lovely holiday, made even more special by the personal touches of our hosts. We can't wait to visit again!

Mike and I spent the first night of our honeymoon at Market Cross, and couldn't have felt more blissed-out. Each breakfast was a slap-up feast. Each bedtime, we slipped between crisp white sheets. And in between we explored the blustery-but-beautiful Northumbrian coast. All in all, it was just perfect - we're planning a 1st anniversary trip back already ....
