“A real gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2013 via mobile

Fabulous guesthouse with the warmest of welcomes, we thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay. The room - Red Room - was well equipped and extremely comfortable. Little touches, such as the N'espresso machine, homemade flapjacks and cake on arrival, made all the difference. Breakfast was also superb.

As for Belford, it has limited charms, but is ideally located to access some delightful neighbouring sights as towns.

Thanks again for the reviews both here and Booking.com. So glad you enjoyed your stay and that the way we run Market Cross and how we treat our guests shows as being important to us.
You have highlighted Belford as not being the best of locations and to be fair it isn't a "hive of activity" by any ones estimation. But what it IS, is a quiet village in which to relax after your day out and not be bothered by busy streets and noisy revelers in the evening. We are very much in the center of all there is to see in North Northumberland and we feel that makes us an ideal location in which to stay and explore.

We've just spent a lovely night in the Red room of the Market Cross Guest House. We arrived at 6 to a warm welcome of homemade cake and coffee. The room was beautiful, comfortable and with lots of small touches for additional comfort and enjoyment, including a glass Lindisfarne port on the landing. The breakfast was both varied and delicious accompanied by positive advice on how to get the most from this stunning area.

A lovely review, thank you. We always hope that guests see us as we are and realise that this is just how we are. Amanda is always trying new things in the kitchen and the various cakes that come out of it are one of the things we love to offer as a welcome.

New owners have maintained the excellent standards of this very pleasant guest house. The Red Room was first class in its facilities and comfort. Breakfast choice was very good, and the attention to details impressive. We didn't sample the evening meals which could have been ordered in advance from an extensive menu, but from the standard of the breakfast I imagine they would be very interesting. .

Room Tip: The big Red Room is worth the extra

We have recently started offering evening meals and our first was for the AA inspector. This led to us gaining the dinner award and so far they have been very well received. when the new website is up and running everyone will be able to see the menus we offer and hopefully more guests will choose to have supper with us. We are also going to be offering a cheese board for those who have already eaten during the day and just want to relax in the evening.

We stayed in the 'Blue Room' at the Market Cross Guesthouse on the 15th/16th March wanting a 'get away from it all' mini break. Our room was absolutely immaculate, the bed extremely comfortable and if you love a bath then this is the room for you! We loved the little extras, home made flapjack, handmade soaps, even a glass of sherry or mead if you feel so inclined. Amanda and Steve were excellent hosts and made us feel very welcome. Breakfast was beautifully cooked and Amanda's blueberry pancakes are to die for! We have no hesitation in recommending Market Cross Guesthouse to anyone - we will be back :)

Apologies for not replying earlier
Thank you so much for this review. The blue Room is lovely and light and relaxing and just how we want our guests to feel here. We had just introduced the soaps which are handmade locally and are lovely. Another added touch we thought our guests would love.
We hope to see you again and unless you really want that bath again, we may have refurbished the Red Room by then and you could try the larger room and really stretch out relax in the evenings

I stayed at the Market Cross last night, with my 8 year old daughter. It's a great base if you want to visit Banborough Castle, Holy Island or the Farne Islands.

We had a very warm welcome and were made to feel at home immediately. Once in the room (beautifully decorated with a view of sheep in the fields beyond) Amanda gave us some homemade blueberry cake (very delicious) and an option of Linisfarne mead or sherry. We had fresh milk, a coffee machine, a huge selection of teas and hot chocolate.

I was most impressed with the free wifi, hair dryer and hidden extras such as conditioner (it irritates me that most hotels do not supply this), shoe polishing kit, sewing kit, bottle opener, electric alarm clock... I could go on. It was a home from home. The flat screen TV had many channels to choose from.

For breakfast, there was a big and imaginative selection. My daughter had the blueberry pancakes. There were some lovely vegetarian choices as well. Being a carnivore, the full Northumbrian went down a treat.

Amanda even gave us a voucher for Banborough Castle.

It didn't surprise me at all that the hostess had worked for a large and hugely successful hotel, teaching cookery.

I urge anybody who needs a good base for Northumbria's attractions to use this B&B...we will certainly visit again :-)

Room Tip: We had the yellow room

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. It's not in our nature to not be friendly and welcoming to our guests and we believe that's how it should be anyway.
Since taking over at Market Cross we have made a point of making sure what we have in each room is of good quality and of use to our guests hence the Nespresso machines for good coffee. We make a point of not putting things in rooms just for the sake of it. We are still planning further refurbishment later in the year.
Our evening meals are available Monday to Thursday on request when guests book direct with us and we can email the menus for them to look at. We will be changing the menus to make sure we stay seasonal and of course we source as much as possible locally.
We really look forward to seeing you both again and you can see some more of what this area has to offer.

We had a lovely over night stay at Market Cross Guest House on our way to Scotland . Steve and Amanda were perfect hosts and made us feel really welcome on our arrival . Our room was immaculate with a great view of the garden and surrounding area and a nespresso coffee machine for a proper coffee and a few homemade flapjacks , all little touches that make such a difference . Steve and Amanda were always there to help and as we were eating out that night , they recommended a nearby pub/restaurant and all we could say was wow , why this place doesn't have mitchilin star , I dont know ! We had a fantastic nights sleep in one of the most comfortable beds i've ever been in . The breakfast menu was impressive and we opted for the full Northumberland which was a delicious variation on the full English with local produce and we started with homemade poached fruits with yogurt and finished with homemade toasted bread and homemade preserves , Amanda is a wizard in the kitchen and anything and everything that can be homemade , is ! Again at breakfast we had the perfect hosts who also let us know about the local area and things to do . Would we stay again ? 100% yes and would highly recommend Market Cross Guest House to everyone , it was a perfect start to our week away .

Hi Derek and Sue,
Thank you for this lovely review. We think it shows that we listen to our guests and provide the standard we would want from a guest house if we were staying here. Amanda works very hard at providing great food and as I tell everyone, if she can make it she doesn't buy it. That way you know that what your eating has taken time and effort to be so good.
We have now started serving evening meals Monday to Thursday and our menus are available on request when booking direct, so when you come back and see us you can try Amandas cooking for dinner too.

This was a lovely guesthouse, just 10 mins drive from the spectacular Northumberland coastline. My husband and I stayed two nights in the newly refurbished green room; espresso machine and home made shortbread biscuits and flapjacks, a view to the back garden. Steve and Amanda where very friendly and helpful hosts and we loved our breakfasts with more of Amanda's homemade food.. we highly recommend this place, and will gladly come back again.
