Outchester and Ross Cottages
Reviewed September 22, 2013

Just returned from a week in Skylark, a real home from home. This is the best self catering holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in; clean, spacious and very well equipped.

Each cottage has designated parking and private garden. The business is very efficiently run with a contact number for David, gardener/caretaker, to call if you have any problems. We had a minor problem when on the way out for a meal one evening the light bulb in the entrance hall blew and fused all the kitchen lighting. By the time we got back all had been sorted.

The complimentary bottle of wine and hospitality tray are a lovely welcoming touch.

The area was a pleasant surprise to us. Northumberland has so much to offer and we hadn't expected such an attractive countryside, the views are spectacular.

We only had one bad day of weather (not bad for September, or, let's face it, any time of year!) so we spent some time, and money, in Barters Bookshop in Alnwick, a huge place in the old railway station with, we believe, the best hot chocolate in Northumberland!

We have already decided that there is still plenty for us to do on our next visit and when we get round to planning it, Ross Cottages will definitely be where we will stay.

The only reason we did not give top marks for sleep quality is that we both found the bed too firm and were very achy first thing in the morning. I know this is a very subjective matter and you could not possibly get a mattress to suit everyone, so next time we will bring our mattress topper!

Dear Jane
Wow! Many thanks for your lovely review. We're very pleased you found Skylark Cottage the best self catering holiday accommodation you've ever stayed in. Praise indeed! It's good to know how helpful you found David. He will be delighted to hear that. Happy to hear that you found Northumberland so attractive with lots to do - and that you enjoyed Barter Books too. We are assessing the firmness of the bed at Skylark and may replace it pending investigation. Thank you for drawing this to our attention.
Thank you again for taking the time to write your review.
Kind regards
Kate

Lovely cottage, spacious and clean with all the equipment that you need in the kitchen etc. lovely complementary wine tea coffee etc and cleaning materials already there ,so no problems if you arrive from abroad for instance.very well located cottage, handy for lots of castles and beaches! As it is part of a row of converted farm workers cottages there is a chance to be neighbourly and talk to other people.,if you want to. There is a great children's play area as well as private garden area outside the cottage at the back. We loved it and would definitely stay there again and recommend it to others.

We had the most peaceful and relaxing holiday we have ever had in this country. The weather was amazing and the cottage was light, spacious, clean and comfortable. We loved that it was so close to the wonderful beach, the south-facing garden was peaceful to return to and the children made friends with some other children staying next door and had 'the best holiday ever'! A week wasn't long enough and we fully intend to return to Ross Cottages as there is lots more we want to see & do in Northumbria.

Now on our last day of a 10 night stay in The Ducket to celebrate my 50th Birthday and we have had the most fabulous time. The weather has been fantastic all but for one day when we had torrential rain and high winds and oddly enough we were glad to experience this type of weather during our stay. We were cozy and warm whilst the rain lashed the windows and being high up meant you could really feel the weather! The Ducket really is a unique experience and the views are fantastic over the Cheviots on one side and the sea and Holy Island on the other. Having one room on each floor certainly kept us fit and yet the space wasn't pinched and each floor/ room is laid out well. The whole place was spotless and when the flush button on the toilet failed I contacted David, the Caretaker, and it was fixed within about 4 hours! Excellent service and nothing would have been too much trouble. Overall a wonderful time and we will be sad to leave and go back to a normal house!

Dear Tricia
Many thanks for taking the time to post a review of The Ducket. We're happy that you had a unique and memorable 50th birthday and that you enjoyed your stay so much. It's great that you had such good weather and only one day of rain, but interestingly a lot of our guests remark that being warm and cosy high up in the Ducket during a rain storm is quite a magical experience! Thank you again.

We have just returned from a fabulous week in the Outchester Cottages. Shepherds Cottage was wonderful, very well equipped and comfortable. We had everything that we needed, and really enjoyed exploring the area. The cottages are very well located, easy to reach the beaches at Bamburgh with a 5 minute drive, and we would love to return.

Our first stay in Northumberland and what a treat it was! The cottage was very well appointed with a washing machine and tumble dryer as well as dishwasher - perfect for a family getaway. The location was superb, with a lovely clean sandy childrens play area and just a short drive from Bamburgh and the gorgeous beaches around there. We were very impressed with the attention to detail and the little 'extras' that made life that little more pleasant during our stay there. We would definitely recommend the Outchester Manor cottages to our friends and family and hope to return there ourselves in the future.

It was our first time in Northumberland and although we had heard many good things about it, were still surprised by its beauty, its relaxed atmosphere and its friendly people. Our holiday was made perfect by the pretty cottage we stayed in at Outchester and Ross. Dovecot cottage was well presented throughout, clean, tidy and had all the amenities we could have required. The exterior spaces were equally as apealing with large well kept gardens, which were secure so and ideal for our two young children - the play area was also well kept and our children played happily there each evening with other children staying in the cottages. The rear patio was perfect for outdoor dining and for watching the beautiful sunsets with a glass of wine. With only a few miles to the beach at Bamburgh and equidistant between Alnwick in the South or Berwick to the North, the location was perfect. We will most definitely return to Northumberland and 'Outchester and Ross cottages' will be where we shall stay. Perfect!
