“Reasonable food - hit and miss service”
Reviewed May 31, 2013

We had a reasonable meal tho starters were served 10 mins apart. Our first waitress was lovely but subsequent ones were brisk and unapologetic for the delay in serving. It's a pity that the service lets it down as the hotel, bar and restaurant have been beautifully refurbished.

Lovely dinner, breakfast limited to 'Full-English' or 'Kipper', decor and comfort excellent - but avoid Room 2 - throughout the night some contraption (a boiler?) repeatedly ignited - off 3 minutes/ on for 8 minutes - and reminded me of sitting in an EasyJet with the droning engines. What added insult to injury was that when paying I asked whether there was a boiler in the vicinity of Room 2 which performed throughout the nigh and a look of feigned surprise appeared on the face of the receptionist - as if 'Golly gosh, I've never heard that one before.' Spoilt our stay. Never mind - did enjoy the lamb-shank.

Room Tip: NOT NUMBER 2 - Boiler (or Jet engine?) in full use 24 hours

BOOKING
I booked a short breay away, at vey short notice, and thought that I had arranged Dinner, Bed and Breakfast. This was not so, although dinner was not a problem, for we were accommodated each evening. The hotel does not offer DB&B, for some reason!
RECEPTION
We arrived at the hotel and was received in a friendly manner, and shown to our room, in an efficient manner. We were accompanied to our room, given all the keys, and the actions of various locks were demonstrated to us. We have never had such attention before, save at a much more expensive hotel. We were shown where the dining room was, and the way to the bar.
Other guests obviously did not have the same experience, for some people were waiting a long time to be 'received' and some people even wandered into the bar and requested attention. This is one aspect which the staff need to address.
DECORATION
The decoration of the reception area, the dining room and the bar are all modern, fresh, and very pleasant aspects of this hotel. A clean and fresh vision provides confidence. However, the bedroom, whilst being adequate, was not as well decorated, nor furnished as the public areas, which was a little disappointing.
There was a television which was screwed to the wall, at a height which meant that we were straining our necks at an unusual angle. I am not sure why this annoys me, but it does, as it simply lowers the tone. We are unusual people who do not own a television, and holidays are the only opportunity for us to watch. I know there is seldom any good programmes on, and even less that we would want to watch, but should we wish to do so, an eye-level television is more suitable to everyone.
The furniture in the room was starngely arranged, and my wife spent the first evening visually rearranging the room.
THE BAR
This was clean, tidy and modern, and is a very pleasant space to sit and talk. It is a place where one wants to be.
DINING
The dining room is equally pleasant and fresh. The staff were attentive, and relatively efficient, both in the evenings and at breakfast. The dinner menu was a little stange, and did not change during our stay, and we suspect that it seldom changes. This is a pity for the retaurant has a lot of potential. Some of the dishes were attractively served, but others were bland to view, accompanied by strange vegetable arrangements, and strange to eat. The food appeared to be 'plonked' onto the plate, rather than arranged.
I ordered a steak on the first evening, whilst there was no problem with the cooking, the cut was extremely poor. The chef should change butcher if he cannot obtain quality meat.
The menu was so bland that we talked of eating elsewhere, but as it rained that night, we changed our minds. However, the thought demonstrates our concerns.
Brakfast was a little spartan. Fruit consisted of prunes and apricots. There was a reasonable selection of cerials. The cooked breakfast was average, included beans and black pudding, but lacked mushrooms and the sausages were bland and mass produced. In the main it was a serve yourself establishment, including coffee, but if you want tea, then that is served to your table.
CONCLUSION
The test is would we revisit? On balance I suspect not, despite the location, it is extremely near to Bamburgh Castle, the service is 'not quite right.'

Room Tip: We stayed in a large front room, no. 1.

We stayed here on Friday 3rd May with my brother & his wife.
We had rooms 2 & 4 which are small but we knew this when booking & as we were only there for one night they were adequate for our needs.
The hotel is in an excellent location, 5 minutes walk from the castle giving an excellent impression from the outside on the main street of Bamburgh extending to the modern contemporary interior. A minor critisism would be that the bar area could be a little more inviting for just having a drink & chat in that they have no relaxing chairs to sit in, instead they're all hard wooden dining chairs. Obviously they still need to cater for passing diners especially in their busy periods, so perhaps comfort takes a back seat?
We dined in the restaurant at night with extremely good food being served. My wife & I both had the fillet steak/cray fish special. A different angle on surf & turf but fantastic value in taste, portion size & price.
Breakfast again was excellent, cooked to order & very tasty
ALL the staff we encountered were extremely friendly & helpul which gives the Lord Crewe an advantage on many other places we've stayed in & would certainly encourage us to stay here again.

Was recomended by a friend and it didnt let us down although it has changed since her visit.

Quite shocked at first as it has a very modern decor, uber trendy lit bar area but still retains enough of the old part of the inn with Stone walls and wooden floors.

Great food at a decent price and a location to die for; wonderfull!

As a friend was having their birthday in the pavilion of the cricket ground we booked for one night at the Lord Crew. The hotel is clean and comfortable although the room (we stayed in room 4) was not overly large, it was adequate. I found that wi-fi was available but no one had informed us of this, and had not offered the password at reception which is always annoying. Breakfast was great and the staff in the restaurant were very helpful and friendly. A walk up to the castle and along the beach is an absolute must - there cannot be a finer stretch of sand in the UK!

At £98 for two people it was ok and would probably stay again.
