Owner description: The King of Castles, a fortification has dominated this site since Anglo-Saxon times when it was the capital of the kingdom of Northumbria. The current structure with Keep, curtain walls, towers and ramparts dates from the 1500's to the Victorian restructuring of Lord Armstrong. There are fourteen rooms open to the public including the spectacular Kings Hall, with over 3000 items of artwork, furniture, china and porcelain. The separate Armstrong and Aviation Artifacts museum gives visitors a glimpse into the creativity and industrial genius of Lord Armstrong. With a look at the aviation legacy created by his company after his death.Cafeteria with great, fresh food and wander around the battlements complete a great day out.

If you want to visit a real castle this is the one for you. We loved it for the history and the unbelievable views. The children loved it as it was "a proper castle". Nothing bad to say! Easy parking, nice toilets, nice food in the cosy cafe. And a very reasonable entry fee too!

Thanks for the review, we do try to keep our prices realistic, but as you point out we are privately owned and funded! Views are fantastic even through the winter and we're open every weekend.

A beautiful castle which will not disappoint if you appreciate history. Many rooms brimming with antiques, armour, weapons, cooking utensils, china, etc and an archealogical dig which is currently under way. The shop was small but well stocked. The cafe was lovely with a very good choice of food to suit all tastes and prices, but we were lucky to get a seat as it is very popular. The best part for me was the aviation museum, which was very moving and amazing, (and I'm not 'into' planes,) especially the poetry. Don't miss it, we have much to be proud of and this museum showcases some brilliant pieces.

Great views from the Castle, in a dramatic setting. The state rooms are interesting , but if you are not into china, could be a little boring however the armoury and the dungeon were good. Also with the Archaeology digs It would be nice to see more on what they have found or hope to find etc..

The tea room becomes very crowded at lunch time which meant we never got to have the Steak and Farne Ale Pie which we had set our hearts on. Perhaps having two tea rooms or an over spill area so that when weather a little inclement more can be accommodated?

Thanks for this pleased that we worth the trip. I agree the china can get a little overbearing and we do have plans to make it more interesting and less dominant. Currently working on laternative cafeteria plans as well.

Lovely castle with lots of rooms to see, best to go on a day when the weather is fine as the views from the castle are meant to be stunning, it was quite foggy when we went so couldn't see much. Prams arn't allowed in most of the castle but there is a safe place to leave them at the entrance. The tea room is good serving nice food and cakes and not too expensive only downside was it is a little small and you felt a little squashed.

Thanks for your review and understanding about prams. Glad you enjoyed the food and we appreciate the cafe can get a bit crowded on a busy day, victim of its own popularity. We are investigating alternatives for next year.

Cheers
