What a star amongst 'gardens'
If you want a monoculture of roses or cherry trees or huge man made waterfals, go to Alnwick Garden.
If you enjoy and are inspired by the blending of gardening and landscape, then Howick is the place for you. Although there is an area of formal garden around the house, the real joy is in the landscape and the arboretum which stretches down to the sea. There are a myriad of paths through the trees - most of them labelled, and the Long Walk takes you down a sheltered valley forming a part of the arboretum, with plantings of newer specimens in the care of magnificent mature beech trees. As you wander the paths htere are constant surprises, be it in plantings around the house, or in the informal areas where newer plants, shrubs and trees are in their labelled and rabbit proof jackets,
In the spring the snowdrops and daffodils lift the spirits. and as the year progresses clearings amongst and beside the paths come alive with different species.
Oh yes - and the tearoom is elegant, roomy, and has excellent fresh and home made food, served by people who make you feel like a vistor, and not just another punter.
HIghly recommended to gardeners and tearoom afficionados
Look out for the Northumberland Snowdrop, the Handkerchief Tree ( Davidia involucrata) in bloom, and of course, Earl Grey tea - you're where it was invented!
Just - Don't go if you think a garden has to have 30,000 roses or spectacular man made energy using waterfalls to be a garden.
