My family, friends and I went for a day out. The grounds and the inside was immaculate and beautiful to look at. The best part was the look alikes characters of Harry Potter that was taking place. The acts they put on was brilliant and then to go inside and for children or adults to be able to put on period costumes and wander around was brilliant.

Alnwick Castle and Gardens is a good day out, although combined entrance fee is almost £25 per person. However we took advantage of the option of extending that to cover return during the next 12 months and have now been back 3 times.
The castle is very well maintained - I think the family actually live there - and there is a lot to see.
The gardens are obviously more interesting in the summer, and on a nice day, but well worth spending some time walking round. The water features are fun, and interesting as well, the Poison Garden tour is interesting and well done, and the Treehouse worth a visit.
The only thing that lets it down is the standard of the food in the cafes, but we now stop off in Alnwick before we visit the Castle, as there are lots of lovely cafes and tea shops there, which are much better value and a higher standard.

We were driving between York and Edinburgh and decided to stop at Alnwick Castle. In case you didn't know, this was the castle used as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies. It has been in the same family since it was built over 700 hundred years ago. The 12th Duke of Northlumberland and his family still live there. It is beautiful, inside and out. It was fun to see the old and new together. The staff were very knowledgable and helpful. They were eager to share the history. It was a highlight of our trip.

Having visited here last September and wound the daughter up with Harry Potter postings to her while she was at work, it was only a matter of time before we came back, this time accompanied by her and her boyfriend

As luck would have it, the day we arrived had an extra Harry Potter day added (14th June) so after a 6 hour drive and checking in to our hotel (The Hog's Head Inn) we came over for the afternoon.

This would be a quick visit as we were coming back properly the following day.

Ticket price is excellent value for money as it lasts all year

Located the correct place and time for the display and was not disappointed. The Harry Potter look a like was excellent and really stayed in character, especially when I was pointing the camera at him. Daughter had a whale of a time watching him and managed to get a photo with him after the display, and was thrilled when he said she looked like a Slytherin. Throughout the whole show (about 20 mins) he was really friendly and interacted with the audience, naming them as relations to the main characters and involving the children in the magic. A real class actor and performer who never seemed rushed or eager to get away

We then did the Knights Quest a great spooky experience with life sized models in dungeons

Came back the next day and spent the morning in the gardens and the afternoon in the castle, visiting the state rooms and the outer buildings.

I have to say that the state rooms bore me, but the wife and daughter loved it, especially the library and the viewing room with load of drawers to open.

For me, the highlight is definitely the ghost story, which take place in the dimly lit dungeons under the castle and is not for those of a nervous disposition. The daughter was properly scared a few times and loved it (I positioned her where she would get the full effect each time). No spoilers here, but it is a must on the visit list - places are limited, so get your ticket as soon as you arrive at the castle.

Although our tickets run out soon, this may be a place to visit again in the near future and I cannot recommend it enough

We spent the whole day in the Alnwick Garden and then the Castle, followed by an evening meal in the Treehouse. The Castle is good for anyone, even children, as the Knights Quest and the Dragon Quest are very scary (maybe not for the too young though).
