Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The Aln Valley Railway is re-opening the branch railway line which ran from Alnmouth on the Edinburgh to London main line up to Alnwick. Lionheart Station (use NE66 2HT for satnav) is open on advertised days, with parking, entry to museum, engine shed and displays of rolling stock all free. Rides are available at modest fares for short trips in a fully restored carriage behind a steam locomotive, or brake van rides hauled by diesel or on BUZZ, the Wickham trolley. The Buffet Stop cafe is open for teas, coffees, traybakes and sandwiches. Combine a visit to the railway with visits to Alnwick's other attractions for a really good day out.

There isn't a huge amount to see at the moment, but it is slowly growing, and will be great when it gets more funding. What they are trying to do is brilliant, and I just hope that they can continue. You can go on a short train ride, and there are other carrisges to see. Still building it up.

I can only echo the comments from the other reviews about the Aln Valley Railway. The friendliness of the volunteers on the railway is brilliant. It was a very wet day when we visited, but the team on duty pulled out all the stops to ensure our visit was still enjoyable. They were only too pleased to show us around and answer our questions about the project and the railway to Alnwick.

Their café is probably the best value of money we encountered on our holiday and whilst it is situated in a portable building it is clean and very well kept. The food is also good and as mentioned is excellent value for money.

I do not think that the cost of the short ride on the Wickhams trolley is overpriced when compared to other similar railways, as indicated by another review. We should not forget that this is still a project in it's early years and they need to raise funds to help complete their plans.

I would recommend a visit by anyone who has even the smallest interest in railways as it is not everyday you get to ride on such an unusual train.

I wish the project well and look forward to returning to watch the progress made by such a friendly and enthusiastic bunch of people.

We have visited a couple of times in recent years. As others have echoed, the enthusiasm being put into this novel project is great to see. Also the skills of those involved are an inspiration. An excellent demonstration (to adults or children) of proper, oily, nuts-and-bolts engineering - this coming from an engineer.

Although still in its very early stages you cannot fault the friendliness and enthusiasm of the great group of people who are building what will eventualy become a truly fantastic attraction.. Although only a short section of track is open so far there is still a fair amount to see.The volunteers who run the place are more than happy to explain all about what is happening and what has happened.
There is a cafe, small shop and a museum as well as engines and rolling stock to see and get up close to.
Its the kind of place that you will want to keep going back to in order to see how it progresses and enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

We have been to the aln valley a few times now and we will keep coming back to see the progression of the track. We have had a ride on the wickham shuttle once as it when from a donation to £2.50 per adult which starts to add up that is my only negative about the place
